The seperate fob only works on cars post 97 i think....

94-96 was IR... then it moved to a seperate RF fob.

98 RF was integrated into the key

Switch from IR to RF happened in model year 95.

IR types were integrated in key.

RF types from 95 to 99 were either a seperate fob or integrated in key, depending on age.  Both RF types in this range are compatible with each other, assuming same make (virtually all appear to be Megamos).

RF types from 2000 (facelift) have 3 buttons, and are key integrated.

before you give away (yes please!), can you post up piccie of working fob, and the replacement one?

IR types seem to come up rarely on ebay.

Thinking about it my dad had a 94 2.5td cdx and his had the red sensor next to the sunroof switch and the remote built into the key with one big button in the middle to lock/unlock and a little one on the side of the key.
