3.0 Elite dead
« on: 20 January 2008, 12:53:07 »

hi i was wondering if anyone can help me. the problem is my 3.0 Elite i bought it 3 months ago, it had just had a new gearbox. every now and again it has said automatic gearbox failure and wouldnt go out of first untill i turne it off and started it again as vx to me with my last omega. its been fine untill the other week. i turned left at a crossroads and it just died. no brakes PAS or engine. i tried to start it and it coughed and spluttered and didnt start. i had i towed home where it then started but is making a throughty engine noise with a deffinate bang, bang, bang like one of the pistons is tying to escape, also sounds as if it is not running on all 6.
i looked at the dipstick and the oil level wasnt showing at all so i took the sump plug out and a whole washing up bowl of oil came out. i filled with 20-50 oil and tried again still no different.
i got a mobile mechanic to look at it and he changed the oil for 10-40 oil and then said its probobly the tappets, big end or little end? i dont understand that but he said its probobly best just getting a new engine :'(
it has sat out side my house now for about 2 weeks. after the first few days i realised that the heaters wouldnt go off so i disconnected the battery. i reconnected today to pump up the tyre and found i dont have any power to the sun roof, stereo, hazzards or electric seats :-?
ive not tried to start it. i daren't lol. i have found about half an inch or oil in number 6 spark plug also this morning.
Any help would be greatly appreciated because it sounds a scrapper to me which is a shame because the body is perfect.

I wonder if the cambelt has slipped or a tensoner has gone.

When you say the cambelt was changed was it a cambelt kit or just the belt ?

Might be a good idea to have a look at the belt and tensoners to see what state they are in
