Rather large oil leak
« on: 19 January 2008, 15:00:12 »

Got an oil leak and i've not got a clue where it's coming from.  I have to aluminium vectra rocker covers fitted and the plug wells are dry as a bone so it's not those that are leaking.

As today is the first day we've not had any rain for ages i've been under the car with the engine running and i can see oil running down the drivers side of the transmission ( I assume it's the transmission) and it is dripping off the 2 torx bolts that are stuck out of the bottom.

The area around the oil filter is covered in fresh oil upto about where the cat is bolted onto the manifold, the same is true of the other side of the engine.

I'm keen to get this sorted now as not only does the car use almost as much oil as petrol it' also fills the cabin with smoke when the engine gets hot and i'm stuck in traffic.

some pics if they'll help.

You can see the oil running down the right hand side of the casing in this one and gathering on the torx bolt.

Also very wet, oil looks like it's coming from up there but I can't see exactly where from.

Oil filter side of engine is also covered although it doesn't seem as bad as the other side

So, any suggestions?

If it's definitely engine oil, how about the half moon sections of the cam cover seals? A failure there would allow a lot of oil out.

Are the breathers clear? The massive disadvantage of veccy cam covers are that instead of causing the easy-to-chance cam cover gaskets failing, other seals fail if the breathers clog up.

The cam cover seals are definately holding ok, had my hand down the back yesterday and everything deels dry.  Breathers were cleaned out just before xmas so they should be clear too.

The only other thing i can think of is that maybe it's getting out of banjo bolt that goes into the oil cooler nearest the rear of the engine,  I had a similar leak out of one of the same type of bolts on the coolant bridge last year.

Just need it to stop raining long eough for me to ahve a look.
