Traction control - how to install?
« on: 21 January 2008, 13:37:53 »

Is it hard to install Traction Controll in my Omega?
What do I have to change (reprogram) to make it work?

If it's not there as standard it's not really possible to retro-fit. Cars without it wouldn't have the support in the engine ECU I'm afraid.

So is it controlled by engine ECU or does it have a separate unit? Was there a special ECU for TC or is just a matter of reprogramming?
I know that there's different ABS pump, but don’t know why (TC doesn’t use brakes, just engine).
Few cables (button and light).
Anything else?

I know that that theres a different ABS pump for cars with TC but what about engine ECU - is it different for TC and for those without, or just a matter of reprogramming ECU (like with Cruise Control)?
I can get a TC+ABS pump, button - not a problem, but do I need new engine ECU+TC (reprogramming of Immo and alarm) or  just a matter of tweaking up my ECU?

Dont think any 2.0 had TC so the ECU is unlikely to have the necessary inputs for engine power reduction.

Yep. Traction control is a co-operation between the engine ECU and ABS ECU. ABS modulator needs a couple of extra valves to support it, ABS ECU needs to have it supported and enabled in firmware and the engine ECU needs to be able to talk to the ABS ECU so they can reduce torque output and apply brakes together. This is the killer because the 4 pot engine ECUs don't have this functionality.

TBH, the system is not very good and barely worth having anyway, IMHO.

It's not really related, but same engine was in Vectra in these had a TC. And what about 2.5 or 3.0 for example? Do they need a separate ECU?

There is never a separate ECU. TC is implemented by the ABS and Engine ECUs on the V6 models.

Vectra systems will be different because the front wheels are driven instead of the rears.

That’s obvious, but the system itself works the same way .In Vectras it monitors front axis, in Omegas rear. I know that it's different and is not interchangeable - it was just an example and just wanted to show that X20XEV had a TC option in Vectras (don’t know if it was a hidden option or required new ECU)
Anyway - is it necessary to change engine ECU on V6 to install TC?
Is there any option in TECH2 which enables TC in these ECUS? (like Cruise Control)

I'm, not familiar with the Vectra setup. Maybe the X20XEV in the Vectra uses the same management system as the Omega and that it can have TC enabled somehow.  :-/

All V6 Omegas have traction control as standard so the need to install it never arises. I don't know if there's an option to enable or disable it in the ECU. Maybe someone who knows their way around a Tech 2 a little better than I will be able to answer that.

4 pot Omegas never had TC, so doesn't exist in the Engine or ABS ECUs.  No software updates to allow it.

You could change to a V6 ABS actuator, write new software for the ABS ECU, new software for engine ECU, and make necessary loom (and probably engine ecu hardware) mods.  Utlimately not worth it.

And the post 98 V6 ABS (Bosch 5.3/TC) does apply brake to slipping wheel before cutting power.

Ok, so let's leave my engine, it's not possible to instal TC on 4 pots.
Not every V6 or TD had a TC so what about these? Is it just an software update or do the need new ECU?
So after 98 TC is using brakes?

I may be wrong but I don't think any of the diesels had TC and I think all V6s did. I don't believe it was optional on any Omegas.

you dont really need TC on a 4 pot with a 1.7 ton car not much chance of wheel spinning it but saying that i have from time to time.

If its for snow and soforth use a higher gear 2nd gear is my traction control  ;D
