headgasket has gone, help!
« on: 21 January 2008, 14:22:14 »

as the title says, my headgasket has blown on my 2000 v reg 2.5 v6 auto engine (petrol). its pushing oil out constantly now which is smoking and burning off on the manifold which is quite annoying.

i need to know what parts i will need all in to replace the gasket. i'm guessing that valve stem seals, rocker gasket, o rings etc will have to be changed and the same time. has anybody ever had to do this, if yes, could you write a list of what i'll need and where the best place is to get it all from.

if anybody needs any more info before they can help me with my problem let me know and i'll reply straight away.

thanks everyone

If the main symptom is just the oil leak it's more likely the cam cover gasket that has gone. The head gasket is below the level of the exhausts and would be unlikely to leak oil anyway.

Do you have oil in the  header tank?
Do you have oil in the plug holes?

If yes then for the first one, it is the oil cooler that has failed,
If  yes to the second one then you have cam cover gasket failure and these are caused by blocked breathers on the plenium and oil vapour trap behind left hand cylinder bank.

thanks kevin, didn't know that.

gary, are you on about the spark plugs?

i have the oily-mayo substance all round the oil filler cap. its thick with it. the water in the header is cloudy but has no oil mixed in.

the oil is coming from the back of the engine on the drivers side near the brake servo.

does this bit of info help anymore?

thanks for your help so far lads ;)

sounds to me like cam cover gaskets have gone, sure fire way to check is to un plug one of the spark plug leads, the wells will be filled with oil. if your confident with diy car stuff can be done in a couple of hours.

Mayo on filler cap is most likely because you do short journeys...is that right???

Oil leak will be cam covers...plug holes will be the spark plug holes mate :)

There is a 'maintenance guide' if you look in that section and it lists all the parts you will need including the correct sealent and it will tell you how to do it.

Dont forget to clean the breathers at the same time, as failure to do them will mean you have to do them again real soon.
