hi all. hope someone can help.i have 98 2.0 auto estate. engine running fine stopped at traffic lights.went to pull away engine rattled ,loss of power ,lots of smoke from exhaust. lasted a few minutes then ran normally.this happens sporadically.usually starts first time but sometimes takes a while. engine turns ok strong battery but wont fire. once started runs ok til it all happens again. any ideas i love this car but im no mechanic by any means.thanks.

First thing to check for is oil/water in the plug wells.

Sounds like cam cover leaking

Do a full breather clean including the difficult ones, replace the cam cover gasket, Check the plugs and replace the leads with a 2.0

no oil or water in plug wells all dry. problem happens when engine warms up .no mayo on dip stick or oil filler cap.car runs very short journeys. any more ideas would be grateful.

Try cleaning out the breathers and throttle body.

1)Check that your EML light works (bulb not blown or removed).
2)Action paperclip test iaw the following link. You will be looking
   for 4 digit codes. Action with ignition on but engine not running.
   Post up results, good or bad.

3)Do a suction test on your small breather pipe iaw the following
   link. Clean the breathers and Idle Air Control Valve iaw the same
   link. Again, post up results good or bad.

The fact that you are stalling and having trouble starting when
warm, often points to a failing crank sensor and/or an oiling up Idle
Air Control Valve. Both are very common faults on 2.0L Omegas.

Don't forget to give feedback on what you find, so as to expand
the knowledge base on this forum.

Hi, Just read your post. Still not sorted mine out yet. Was having service done today to make sure it was not something ordinary but mechanic did not turn up. If that does not work I am going to take it to Vauxhall and get them to find the fault (quoted me £57.50). Could start changing things but knowing my luck it will be the last thing I change. If I find the problem I will let you know. Hope you have more luck than me!!!!!!!!

if not the crank sensor (assuming you replaced with a new one)

and no EML light ,

chances are either fuel flow is disturbed or problem with spark..

if it was spark or fuel flow why would it only happen when warm?. had new leads fitted. :-/
