Am i the oly one?
« on: 27 January 2008, 18:15:04 »

A prat that is?

I just stripped the top of the engine to get to the HBV and replaced as it was leaking.  I then slowly put back what i had removed (plenum, top half of trumpets etc...) I even stopped to smear a little WD40 around the rubber seals between the inlet manifold and plenum.  Put 50/50 mix back in system and started her up..... EML light up, running lumpy, stalled...  :-[

To cut a long story short i left the paper kitchen roll in the inlet holes  :'( :'( :'(
what the FU**ING HELL! ARRGGHHHHHHHHH WHAT AN IDIOT!

Anyhow i spent another hour pratting about removing the inlet bridge and removed paper tissues which was stuck above the valves.  Finally put it back in one piece and fired her up... running sweet now  :)

What damage could i have caused as it seems perfectly pk now?

Cheers

I did leave them hanging out but they were slowly pushed back in as i leant over the engine to do the HBV.

I am so glad i got it all done before dark fell though.

I'll put this down as experience  ::)

Busy mind?  tell me about it.  I never stop!

One more thing, no i've dropped the cooland and replaced the HBV i noticed that the coolant has dropped after a 15 mile journey.  I'm hoping this is because of air in the system and it's burped itself.  I can't even remember if the cooland level rises or lowers when the engine is hot??

Hopefully not another leak  :y

You're not the only one, hence the joke/warning on the V6 cambelt DVD.    ;)

You tend to find that the harder you concentrate on not making any mistakes is the time you do, i think they call it sod's law ::).

Any way it sounds like you got away with it and as for the water level it's most likely what you think, just settling down. Keep an eye on it though to be safe ;)

Hee-Hee   :)

I think that your story brings back memories to all of us.

I usually keep old tea towels and hand towels to use as rags.
I often stuff one down below where I'm working, so that if I
drop a nut or a socket it doesn't disappear down into the bowels
of the engine, or that alternate universe where all dropped
widgets seem to vanish to, never to be seen again by human eye.  :o

When I changed my old Merc's Glowplugs, you can guess why,
after about 20 mins after start up, after finishing the job, that I
was getting this strange burning smell.  ::)

So you're not alone.
The only folk who never make a mistake are those that never
do anything!!

If they are never going to take a risk and try actually doing something,
and I don't just mean doing a few car repairs or servicing,
why bother living?
Life's a risk. Embrace it and get out of your comfort zone now
and again is what I say.

LOL  I must admit i added an hour or so chasing a torx bit around the black hole when i dropped it.  Wasn't funny as it was the only one i had and the inlet bridge was half installed, so that would have stopped me until monday morning!  I laugh about it now but i wasn't too please with myself at the time.  I think lack of dinner (err Guiness) made my hands a bit shakey hence dropping it twice and adding an hour.

I also spent 10 mins looking everywhere for a bl**dy screwdriver which was under my nose all the time!

I think i need to take a chill pill when i next work on my car!  :y

Cheers

...and let's not forget the "hunt for the mis-placed nut" only to give up searching, obtain another nut and find the missing nut...still in the socket used to take it off in the first place.
I'd even spent time working out trajectory angles (I think that's the correct terminology !) to work out where it may have gone.  :-[
