For the last couple of days i havent been feeling very warm in the Omega.....early this afternoon i thought right ive had enuf off feeling cold.....even tho climate was set on 22C.....and wacked the temp upto HI.....then noticed no max speed of fan   ....So thats been the reason   Fan has packed up  

Or is it? Could be the speed controller i guess or the climate panel  :-/

I'll have to try to sort it in the morning......as trying to work this afternoon and evening in the rain with no blower fan......even with the temp set to HI and aircon turned on......it was a struggle to stop the windows misting up.

Just been looking in the maintenece section......there doesnt seem to be anything about getting the blower fan out, so any advice greatfully received  

If there enough interest i can do a 'How to' if there isnt already one and ive missed it.

First thing tho is to check the fuse......A certain prog seems to suggest F33 feeds the blower fan 'Electronic air conditioning system' is how F33 is described in the manual......correct fuse  :-/

F12 (20A) and F14 (30A) are usd by the climate panel to.

I take it your scuttle drain is all nice and clear?

Your worrying me now   ....Omega did do summat else strange today.....for about 30secs it 'hunted' between 500rpm and 1500rpm whilst queing at a roundabout.....took it outa D and rev'd it and it settled down and behaved......hope the lpg ecu isnt sitting in water

Well its all dry in there  

Checked the fuses all ok  

Got the glovebox out.....and a ventilation pipe (i think thats gonna be a pig to get back in tho!)

Thought id check some measurments.

So IGN on an blower speed set to max

Across Red and brown wires from the speed controller to the blower about 1V.....that aint right.
Red wire from speed controller to the blower and ground....12v....thats seems correct to me, tho its always at 12v no matter the setting of the blower.  :-/

Input to speed crontroller.....accross red and brown 12v ....seems correct
Across brown and blue input to the controller it steps from about 2.5v to 5v depending on fan speed setting.....seems correct.

Not quite sure what the white is for, unless its just another 0v from the climate panel.

Sooooo.......my conclusion is speed controller is fubared

Mind you i think they've have the BMW TD designers on this   ......pita job to get the speed controller out......i had remove passenger side air vent, loosen airbag cover,remove glovebox, remove ventilation pipe (thats gonna fun trying to get that back in!) unclip wiring loom and drop down (probably not neccesary, but gave more room)

And i havent got the blower fan out......which i dont think is faulty so no need.

This took me nearly 3hours......of cursing, struggling, and referencing a certain prog to find 'hidden' screws.

On my merc this was a 1/2hr job tops to get the blower fan out and the speed controller was part of the blower assembly......very easy by comparison.....nothing else to remove to get it out.

However on my visits around scrappies this afternoon.......no speed controllers to be had   .....best i got offered was one outa a BMW.....it did cross my mind i might be able to use it.....but it only had 5 connections on.....the omega one has 6.....so passed on it....and if it did work it would have been a right bodge.

So i'll have to wait till Monday now.....and carnt work either   .....with half the dash missing....i aint putting it back together, just to take it apart again.

Well.....liking a challange   I decided to take the blower out as well this morning...i must be mad  

The blades seemed a bit stiff to me......and sticking the leads across a spare 12v batt i have did nothing but cause a little spark on the batt terminal.

So i began to think the fan was duff as well.

So a visit over to my Dad's.......who is great in fixing motors or finding out what's wrong with them.

He prodded and poked it.....and commented on it did seem a bit stiff to rotate.....he did put some very thin oil in the bearing area.....then he got out his AVO......and tested it electrically.....he couldnt find anything wrong.

And asked was i sure it didnt work......i told him i tried it on a spare batt i had but it did nothing.
But we decided to double check it......so omega bonnet open and stuck it accross the batt......and guess.....it blooming well worked.....so my spare batt must be flat.

So it is looking like the speed controller.......

I was told by a scappy dealer they're only about £30 from vx.......if so i'll get a new one.

Its part no 90512510 if anyone has access to check for me.....otherwise i'll call vx dealer in the morning.

Just in case anyone wants to know the outcome.....

Speed controllers are NOT £30......try £130....

So i bought one, on the promise that i could take it back if it didnt fix the problem.

And it didnt   So i took it back for a refund.

I'd sorta convinced myself it must be the fan motor......but wasnt prepared to pay £169+vat for one from vx dealer.

So i rang round a few scrappies.....and one about 10miles away had a 2.0GLS in there.

I was taking a little gamble coz there are 2 two different fans.

But i ripped it out anyway (luckily the vultures had already been at it and most of the stuff that gets in the way had already been removed)

Gave the scrappy man a tenner for it......and it works  

So it was the blower fan after all!

Glad to hear it's working again. How bad was the blower motor removal? And does it look like you can get to the bearings easily?

Reason I ask is that mine makes nasty squealing noises in the morning until it's warmed up. If it's not too bad I might take it out and try to lube it before it goes the same way as yours.

A right PITA job  

Passenger side vent off
Loosen airbag to get glovebox out
Remove ventilation duct that runs accross the back of the motor between side airvent and centre console.
Unclip thick wiring loom and drop down bend out off the way.
Theres 4 torx screws holding fan motor assembly in. 3 screws easy to get to...1 not.....you will a torx shapped like a 'L' and you can only turn it 1/4 turn at a time.
Then you have wiggle the assemby out as the woring loom still gets in the way.

Sounds straight forward, but this took me 3 hours on Saturday.

Ive still got to take off old motor again.....coz like a tit I put it back in again yesterday.

When its stops peeing down......i'll let you know how long it takes me to get it all back together.

One bearing is fairly accessable the other is difficult to get to. I think if you get another blower fan from a scrappy and be prepared to use that if you carnt quiten yours down......Its not a job i would like to repeat too often.

Oh and the other thing my airbag warning light has come on.....i assume coz its loose or unplugged a sensor or summat for it......not too bothered coz i can reset it with my cheapo tech2.....but worth a mention if you dont access to a 'reset' tool.

Ive still got to take off old motor again.....coz like a tit I put it back in again yesterday.

 

Maybe I'll get hold of a second hand motor and make sure it is tip top, then change when mine when I get sick of it.

Well.....3 hours later...old motor out again.....new scrappy one in...speed regulator back in.

and all back together....

However to avoid wasting an hour trying to refit the vent pipe....and NOT doing it

TOP TIP......cut all the insulation tape of the cable tray holding the wires into it......and rip the bl**dy thing out......so much more room and refitting the vent pipe is easy then  
In fact removing it first would have made the job of getting the fan assembly in and out easier too  

Getting the cable tray back in.....is easy too
