I would like to ask you for help. My Omega Estate 2.0 16v automatic gearbox shows 7.1 everytime i the speed is over 10 mph. Doesnt matter if I'll press the throttle hard or soft, it will always show 7.1, like its the minimum it can show. When I will let the throttle it will show 7.1-9 when slowing down. Then, when moving faster, it goes down to 9, and eventually reaches 20-25, and 30-50 when driving down the hill.
When accelerating softly it will go down to 12 and when I want to do it fast it will go down to 7.
It will newer show 999.9 when let go the throttle (only when driving about 60-70 mph). When going down the hill with pressed brake, it will show max of 120 MPG, so it always consumpt petrol.
I am frustrated, as the petrol consumption is about 16MPG in city and ca 30 MPG outside. These are not from computer, but calculated from petrol usage.
If everything's ok with the car, and chaging autobox to manual will not help, I will have to sell it as it needs same amount petrol as a van.

I have checked MAF sensor (replaced with another one, which is from anothe X20XEV manual, and is working fine), there are no fault codes, exhaust manifold waas changed (was cracked) but the petrol consumption is the same.
I dont know if this consumption is ok for this engine or theres is something wrong. If theres something wrong is it beacuse of autobox (too big for this engine) or because of some fault in engine.
I've checked the engine. O2 sensor goes from 1 to 5 mV.
Engine temp is 80-92 when driving so it might be low. Dont know if it's low enough to cause high petrol consumption. Thermostat is new and I've checked 2 defferent ones (new as well), and this one is the best so it can opnly be a sensor problem.
What else should I check?

Ignoring the display for now,  those figures are a bit low. I would expect 20-25 in town and well over 30 on a trip at steady speeds.   I don't have experience of a 2L auto though - I imagine in town there may not be much difference with the V6's as you are still stop/starting a heavy car.

Have you checked/replaced  -oil/filter, air filter,  fuel filter, spark plugs?
Are tyres up to pressure?

I assume the EML is not on?

As its a 2L its also worth giving the throttle body/breathers/ICV a good clean too - makes a world of difference.  There is a guide in the maintenance section.

Don't suppose the MID is calibrated for a different spec. of vehicle, is it?  :-/

Still, I think it’s quite high for 2.0.

New oil, oil filter, new air filte, new spark plugs (look OK). Everything apart from fuel filter.
Are tyres up to pressure? Is now 2.5 and 2.3 bar

I assume the EML is not on?  No it’s not on and no error codes.

I can also give more values read from sensors (have the cable)


Car is 1999r X20XEV estate, wheels 16" (225, 55 R16). MID code: 012 3 24060 Is the code ok fro this engine

I think you should have a look at what temperatures the coolant temperature sensor (CTS) is reporting to the ECU.  If it were failing, but not yet reading out of range, you may be overfuelling constantly.

TheBoy - you know that my MID is set to 2.0 16V. Do you think that it's  too big consumption for 2.0?
Abiton - coolant temp sensor shows 80-82 when driving (checked by OpelScanner cable). I think that the sensor is getting old (new thermostat) but even that should be ok for the engine.
O2 sensor shows 0-5 mV so good as well.
MAF sensor replaced from 2.0 16V manual (MID shows min of 12 MPG when accelerating).

I checked standard consumption today - 14MPG!!! (its about 16 assuming on petrol and kilometres)

Is it because of:
- the autobox which is too big fir this engine (9l of oil to run, 136HP instead of 170)
- my engine. Is there something wrong
- Omega itself. Petrol consumption is normal and I cant do anything to reduce it.

Those figure seem low.  I had a 2.0 auto estate and averaged (according to the MID) 23 mpg with 30 on a motorway run

On my 2.2, I struggle to get the mid to display as low as 7.1mpg instant consumption, it can be done but it needs to be foot to the floor on a hill start. When driving steady, like I am this week, I have averaged over 27mpg. That is the drive to and from work so two cold starts per day. My drive to work is about 7 miles give or take and, being Cornwall, there is barely a flat section for the whole journey.

Even if I'm not so careful, I'm disappointed if I don't get 25mpg on normal day to day driving. When accellerating from a standing start, I still get a reading of 12mpg - 15mpg on the mid.

I'm off to Plymouth today, all 'A' roads and a bit of driving in town. I will reset the mid and report back later what the consumption figures are.

Golfbuddy – is it manual or autobox?

As promised.

Started in St Austell from cold engine. First 3 miles in town driving followed by a very steep hill for 2 miles. After that 'A' roads to Plymouth and then city driving before stopping for an hour to do some work. Then, back in the car to St Austell, onto the A30 at Bodmin and finished the journey on the A30 dual carriageway. Kept broadly within the speed limit and very little overtaking.

Summary:

86.9 miles
2 hrs 15 mins driving time
38 mph average speed

2.7 gallons at 31.1mpg.

Car is a 2001 Omega 2.2 CD Automatic.

I've never had the pleasure of any Omega except the 4 pot 2.0 litre, both auto and manual, my last auto was significantly heavier on fuel than all the manuals i've had.I currently get 55 miles for a tenner, but a tenner is only 2 gallons and on a steady motorway run I get 38 mpg. Its not the car its the price of the fuel. REMEMBER VOTE LABOUR AND PAY FOR THEIR PENSIONS.

7.1 consumption is the lowest a MID will display

Im 99% sure i've seen 6.9mpg and 7.0mpg displayed on mine at times...

My first Meggy was a 2.0 16v Auto, no MID but pounds per miles it would do around 27 MPG average and 30+ something on a run.

Forget your MID readings and do a quick top up, 20 quid's worth of petrol should get you about 120 to 160 miles if its an auto or about another 30 miles if Manual.

My money is on the MID has been replaced in its prevoius life from a different Car or the wrong speedo cog in the gearbox.

Press and hold both the two buttons on the MID stalk for 3 seconds and post the MID number on here for the results.

I've got a 98 2.0lt saloon manual and im geting about the same milage  (dont have a mid so worked out from usage).  As yours same readings from temp ect new oxygen sensor and temp sensor. Only started being this bad after head gasket failed.
So if you ever find out please let me know.
