coolant loss again (sorry)
« on: 19 February 2008, 18:31:27 »

Here a question for you all!

After reading every coolant loss post I decided to look into mine... Fed up of topping up every few days...

But now i’m confused!  Ok, I have never once found a puddle on the floor, it runs fine, never overheats, if anything runs a little cool... (thermostat on shopping list)... no visible leaks or traces of antifreeze from HBV or any other pipe work.

So today I  managed to find time today to pressure test the system, plugged it up, pumped up and all pressure was held lovely. As I had the car on a ramp I took it up in the air and checked from the underside, still nothing...
After a cup of tea I came back pressure was there or there a bouts where I had left it but there was a fine drip from a 'thing'... What you guys i’m hoping can tell me is what this 'thing' is and what it does!

... Its located next to the battery and connected to the rad cowling with a jacket like from the idle control, one coolant pipe into the side from the N/S rad top another coolant pipe coming from the bottom 'of the 'thing' going back into the rad O/S. One square connector in the top. It seams to be leaking not from the coolant pipes but from the plastic body, it does look like there is a split in the casing as there is a few philip screws holding it together...

Does anybody know if its serviceable i.e. a 'o'ring because no doubt its mega money from the stealers.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope the description is clear to all  :-/

Hi,
From description it sounds like the auxiliary coolant pump.

It operates when engine is switched off when very hot. Circulates coolant through the engine to cool it down, stops water in engine boiling over. Its on a timer relay.
It operates much like the fan on engine side of radiator runs on when you switch engine off if it's hot.

I don't know if there are any servicible parts inside. If there isnt a hairline crack somewhere, it's probably a leaking shaft seal.

Will leak worse when hot, which may explain why you don't lose much pressure on pressure test.

Certainly sounds like the circulation pump.

This is the same pump, in a different location.  Its the cylindrical gubbins with the hoses at the 9 o'clock position in the piccy.....

Yes thats it to the left of the picture. So if push came to shove its possible to remove/bypass??? It would just cool down slower??

Many thanks.

Would think so, yes, but not 100% sure, TBH.  Another pump from a scrapper or someone breaking one on here would be a better option?

Hi,
You probably wont have any problem without one at this time of the year, but come summer and hot engine, when you stop the engine the remaining heat in it will boil the coolant without any circulation and it will spew out of the filler cap pressure release valve over everything.

Its not a case of it cooling down slower without it, it's there to do a job.
