Redex - Good or Bad
« on: 01 March 2008, 17:48:36 »

Can anyone comment on whether Redex damages sensors or is it really as good as the manufacturer claims on cleaning up injectors etc.....

Hubby used to use it in the car as we were having idle snags. i found it just made matters worse. he is now banned from sticking anything in the car usless its fuel oil and water!

this is my opion once off might be ok but wouldnt use it often.

Service the cars properly and there is no need for additives :y

Its ok, but there are better.

My ratings :

Forte Gas Treatment
STP Injector Cleaner
Redex

A dose every 6 months seems to improve things a little

Helps to prevent the petrol injectors from gumming up.

Gumming up is no fun :(

James - you better put something in before you get it.

Symtoms are very bad starting and rough running until they clear themselves.

Caused by running hot and never firing

I use it every time I get supermarket petrol, ie not BP Shell or Esso

Put in a small dollop.

On the MV6 I use Forte Gas Treatment about once a year.

On the oil burner, I used Diesel Redex if I've had to put in a couple of tanks of supermarket fuel, and Diesel Magic if ever I have fuel filter off.

The Oilman has comethed. So to speak. So we have a top class expert on oils. He is available to tell us why PTFE additives can make a car go 500 miles round the QVC track without oil. And why they are really bad for your modern Vx long term.

Is there anyone like that the "Fuelman" here? Redex is perhaps the best urban myth on petrol additives. I know the only use I found for it was with a bit of wet & dry for cleaning caked up 2 stroke heads and pistons (works a treat for that). Be good if someone could set us straight.

In the meantime, the odd tankful of Optimax (or equivalent) probably does a better job of keeping your fuel system and heads clean. AFAIK.

I have always put in a bottle of Slick 50 fuel treatment when I've bought a new car. You never know whats been run through it or what maintenance has been done in the past. Whether it actually does anything I've yet to prove but it gives me peace of mind  :)

In the good old days when I was aged between 12-14 I used to work in a service station, you no where the pump attendant put petrol in your car for you.
The old boys that came in used to swear by Redex or UCL (upper cylinder lubricant) it came in a big red container and we put it in at 2p per shot.
I think it was designed then for lubricating the valves. Maybe modern fuels have gone past requiring this I don't no.
This was 30 years ago.

I recall de-coking a head once, it was a b1tch to get off, we soaked the upturned head in Redex overnight, it did soften the coking.. it as good as dropped off the next day, so, in my opinion it works :y  There is another angle however, if it losens cr4p, what will it losen in the fuel tank and pipes and duly block the filter / injectors etc.. :-/ :-/

There's always Mr Muscle Drain Unblocker!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
