I had this happen on my Carlton. It was the gearbox switch which had gone, so it may be worth testing the switch to see if it works.

I've just repaired a similar problem with my fog lights, the wiring is carried along the same part of the loom to the boot lid. I traced the break in the section between Gromet from boot sill to inside just behind the spare wheel. As this section is in motion with each opening it could be anywhere along the length from sill to boot lid.  I tapped into the loom behind the spare wheel and replaced the broken wire.  You could check the resistance at the switch and work back from there.

Hope this helps.

Not being anything like mechanically minded I can't tell you (I just passed on what someone else did to fix the problem I had!). I'm sure there are plenty of others who can help.

Start off with the simple stuff first!

Get under the car and short the two wires out that connect to the reverse light switch....if the lights come on you now know where your problem is.

The switch is mounted towards the top of the transmission on the passenger side near the output shaft.
