i tried the search, but didn't get anything & i'm sure it's asked often - what's the best way to stop the headlights getting washed every time i wash the windscreen when the lights are on ?

You can't, unless you disconnect the electrics from the headlamp washer pump.

It washes them for a reason (I'm guessing you have HIDs)

If the screen is dirty ... then so are the lights........ just wash them as designed ....

Well the real answer is clearly, top the fluid level up more often.

The tank holds over a gallon of water so will last quite a while.

Your only other option is to add a switch (somwhere) which defeats the headlight washer relay (which is in the ECU box)

Is this part of the same antiquated measuring sytem?        

The bolt size seems to be written in some out dated latin based language which I have not seen since the 80's  ......

Trouble is, I have not a got a clue what imperial bolt sizes are and the incredible thing is that every modern car in the US will have metric bolts fitted!

Those sizes didn't mean much to me either, & I have used UNC UNF Whitworth BSP etc etc at work over the years - typically on US machinery. As you say though all the cars will be metric anyway.

Hmmn  :-/ why are you worried about washing your headlights?  :-?

Only reasons I can think of this being an issue, is you dont use any screenwash in the water, thus meaning much more water is needed to clean, which makes the tank run out quicker.

or you dislike the spray up the bonnet giving an unusual cleaning look.

Whats the car an early elite without HID lights?  
If you have HID's you want them as clean as possible

I dislike any dirt on the screen, this time of year nearly always have my lights on, and only have to fill the tank rarely.

Another tip is that the headlamp washers only generate a short burst of water, half a second or so, every time the washers are activated, so try to use one long burst of water for as long as required to wet the windscreen ratehr then lots of short busts which will repeatedly fire the headlamp washers.
