Gearbox problem?
« on: 05 March 2008, 12:08:35 »

Hi everyone, this morning coming back from the hospital i pulled up and some traffuc lights and there was a clunk from the car and a loss of power. The gearbox has slipped once before so i put it into park. when the lights changed put it back in drive and there was hardly any power to get up the bank and on the screen it read Automatic Gearbox? Any ideas?
If it needs a new one can i fit an AR35 instead of an AR25?
Thanks guys :'(

Get the sump off and check for thrust washer :(

Fluid change wont hurt, may just be low fluid

Once Automatic Gearbox is displayed, you need to drive it like a manual.

If you are not in Autobahnstormers, pm for a cheap source of gaskets / filters.

Just jacked the drivers side up, undone the filler bolt, and loads of oil has come out even when jacked up... put a bowl under then lowered the car. Started her up went through the gears and there is now no Automatic Gearbox up on the computer....
Could it be there was too much oil in the gearbox?
Am i right in thinking that you start the engine up, work through the gears when the car is on the floor, allowing the level to settle at the level bolt, then fit the bolt back again?

Unless the engine is running when you check the level there will appear to be too much fluid in the box. Top it up with the engine running, take it for a drive and then double check, again with engine running.

Could also be that the fluid is old and has expanded. What does the fluid that came out look like? Red and clear is good, borwn, opaque and smelling of burning is bad.

in my experience it took 2 litres more once the engine was running.

ie filled up with engine off (took about 5 litres)
started engine - took another 2 litres (approx)

so , yes, it would come pouring out if the engine was off.

Kevin the oil that came out was black, so think i will change it with gaskets and a filter.
I topped it up this afternoon with the engine running as Mark explains in the maintence section. I have driven 100 miles round trip to Timbuks and it has behaved brilliantly. So I will check again tomorrow the oil level as I got another bottle of Dexron 3 then see how it goes whilst waiting for the gaskets etc.
Is there an oil level switch inside the gearbox or something along those lines? Just wondering if so the oil level could have been low in which case put on the MID "Automatic Gearbox" warning and put the car into Limp Mode..

The oil will pour out if its old anyway, as older oil has more volume.

As I reckon the box is knackered, I'd clean the filter and use instant gasket, rather than spend a load on gaskets that you'll throw away next week.....

Good point, but when you say Box knackered do you mean the Thrust Washer? If so I would be needing new gaskets and filter anyway when I have to replaced the Thrust Washer on the gearbox...

So you are able to clean the filter then?

so you would clean the filter and the pick up pipe (i assume there is one) then refill with new oil after refitting the sump with gasket sealer just to see how it gets on?

My gut feeling is the box is beyond a simple fluid or thrust washer change.  But drop front sump off, you may be lucky...

If you're lucky, when you drop small one, you may sits bits of thrust washer.  In which case, pop box off, strip it, slot in new washer, put back together, refill, and test.

If you don't find bits, I'd be inclined to get known good replacement box.

Ok so just hope to find bits in the small sump then eh! :-[
Whichever lookin like the box is gonna have to come off, just seems strange that it hasn't played up at all in the 100 miles this afternoon  :-/

The 2nd box on my tractor used to have similar problems, for no apparent reason would lose drive. Flicking into N then D usually cured it.  If you let it slip for too long, it will knacker the box.

Hoe dose it knacker the box? and why is it bad to find no bits of thrust washer?
