Running Temperature Question
« on: 07 March 2008, 16:43:49 »

Sitting in traffic yesterday, my temp gauge crept up to 100 then the little red light came on before starting to cool down again.
Should i be worried or does everyone elses do this when its warm out?

fans should kick in just above 95

be worth checking/replacing the fan switch (in the radiator) see if that solves it.

On a 2.2, should be just over 90 ;)

Well your both right actually  ;D

Slow speed fan on my 2.2 kicks in just over 90.......goes into turbo mode at just over 95.....but it only gets to 95 during hot summer days.

So if yours is getting to 100  :o theres summat wrong

I suppose it could be a bit of crud stuck in the cooling system...
I'll flush it again this weekend.
It did look worrying when it went up to the red line AND the red light came on, then it started cooling down...
The last time i saw it go that high was when the HG had gone :o

Check the fuses in the engine bay fuse box, there are some in there that are related to the aircon fans which come on before/with the main cooling fan.

Would that stop the aircon working too???

Wont stop it working, but wont be as cold as it should.....the fan at the front of the rads should be running all the time with aircon turned on  :y but if it isnt a number of possibilities......one being low gas pressure....

Okay, i have 2 fans, one in front of the radiator and one behind (in the engine compartment) The one in front comes on when the temp gauge reaches 95ish, the other one doesn't seem to come on at all.
Any way i can fool the back one into coming on?
Also, just checked the fuses, according to the guide on here, F4 is the cooling fan but i don't have an F4.

I think the one not coming on is the a/c fan, and hence won't come on if the a/c won't come on (for whatever reason)

Just checked my 2.2 for you, I dont have an F4 either....perhaps its F29 instead.

Tho interestingly when I turn on my AC, both the front and back fans operate, tried it several times to check, AC on = both fans, AC off = no fans.

So id guess your AC isnt working for some reason.

When the fan does come on, is it slow mode or turbo mode (youd know this, mine drowns the engine noise out when in turbo mode)

If it is slow mode......95 is too hot and turbo mode should be on. So im wondering what the ecu thinks the temp is? I recall the Broocie had the same problem.....gauge was reading 5C hotter than what ECU thought it was.......think his problem was the gauges/clocks were not programmed for his MV6.....soon sorted with a TECH2.

So maybe worth a trip to see MDTM or TB  :y

Its turbo mode alright, sounds like a jet engine.
My a/c doesn't blow cold, might need regassing so maybe thats why that one doesn't come on.
Although it doesn't explain the temp reaching 100 the other day unless my theory about a bit of crud floating thru the system is right.
Other thought might be a flaky temp gauge. Nationwide said they changed that when they did the HG, does the original vs copy parts thing apply to temp gauges as well? Maybe i should get a genuine one.
