oil leak?? it cant be good news
« on: 13 March 2008, 12:22:11 »

well, was havin a few snags with my new gearbox, just recently when comin up to a junction she would hasitate when you placed your foot on the gas. You would not feel or hear any clunkin.

well went out to do a fluid check today just to make sure. and well what do you know it needed some. (the oil that came out was not bad at all it was a reddy light brown colour)

so topped it up as per marks guide, well she took 2.5ltrs way too much for my likin, (since she has only done 450 miles since the box was fitted). i cleaned her all up and took her for a drive. well problem has gone! yippy. :) but............

yes there is a but........

when i stopped half way round my test run i looked under the car and well there is a oil leak from the bell housing. :'( :'( its not overly bad but its bad enough. cleaned it up and drove home. still leaking it stops when the engine is off.

i am pritty sure there should be no oil in that part of the gearbox........

is tis a sign that i have gone and fitted a gearbox with a trust washer on its way out??????????? plz say no! ;) ;) ;)

oh and to top it off my hair is covered in ATF yet again!!!

Well, its unlikely to be the thrust washer.

Two quick checks to do:

1) Are the pipes to the oil cooler secure and clamps tight

2) Is the gearbox breather ok, no kinks etc

1) yes dobble checked these as one did look loose but their on there tight.

2) yes i beleive it is its routed up into the engine bay, and is located just at top at the back of the engine. but i will go back out again, and double check.

When you fitted the new transmission Marie, did you re-use the torque converter oil-seal or fit a new one?
I have swapped transmissions (American cars) and I once damaged the lip-seal when struggling to fit the gearbox in place....`resulted in steady (but not major) drip-age.
If there`s oil in the bellhousing that seal might be responsible  :'(

it is steady but not major drip-age..... thi wouldnt bother me too much if you hadent got to roll under the motor to check the Fl*pin level.

Marie, check that the breather pipe can actually breathe ie its not doubled over on itself such that is effectively sealed.

ok ill have a look tomorrow after work.... hopefully with my small hands i might be able to get the pipe completely of the box and check its not blocked.

sorry but please explain how this would make oil end up leaking out the bottom of the bell housing??

Well I'm no expert esp on autoboxes but its the same principal that causes the cam cover seals to go if the breathers are blocked - the pressure needs to vent itself somewhere, and if the breather pipe is blocked it may well force itself out through the point of least resistance - likely to be a seal somewhere highly inaccesible.. :'(

I fitted the TC in the box, and it went in v smoothly, so no seals were clipped then.

Unless of course the seal was already weeping before we fitted it, but I doubt very much it was.

It's not common to have to replace those on Omega boxes in my experience.

Pop the bung out the bottom of the bellhousing and see if anything comes out.

We lost a lot of oil Marie, I expect the cooler took a load in, as did the box etc... check it again in 500 miles, I am certain it will be fine ;)

when you fitted the box did you fit the touqe converter to the box 1st, then fit it all to the engine or leave the converter on the engine and fit the box, there is a oil seal on the converter and its so easy to damage it .
