Air intake hose/Gas convertion?
« on: 30 December 2007, 12:18:33 »

Hi all!
It's happend again!
I have a gas converted 2.6 v6 Omega Estate.
For the second time, since i have owned this fine car, it has backfired on me while running on gas.
The trouble is that it has all but destroyed the offside air intake pipe! Whilst i have done a patch job of a repair, i really ought to get another air intake pipe.
Any suggestions as to where one can be purchased, without extending my mortgage?
Also, has anyone else suffered from this problem with their gas convertion?

It sounds like you have a mixer conversion - I have said several times that this does not suit Omega's - for this reason.

In the short term, you need to approach an LPG supplier who should be able to supply you with a valve to fit in the inlet, which prevents damage in the event of a backfire through the inlet. I would also get the system tuned / checked, to make sure the mixture is somewhere close (it sounds rich).

In the long term, get a sequential LPG frontend, and rip out the mixer system. will cost about £500, but much better reliability, power, economy, and much more tunable with software, as it integrates better with the car's own engine management...

Hiya! Thanks for the reply!

Yes, I think it is a lot to do with the Emmigas conversion.
But, as a 1998 Omega with 117,000 miles on the clock is valued at about £450 by Vauxhall. It would be a tad silly to spend too much money on the car.
I can put up with the odd backfire, that has only happened twice in 7,000 miles, it just means I have to switch over to petrol pretty smartish!  [smiley=shocked.gif]

There is no LPG service point here on the Isle of Wight, but I have approached one in Stubbington who refuses to have anything to do with Emmigas! [smiley=sad.gif]

On another point,  I also have three small holes bored into each hose and these are sealed with tape (I now use masking tape) to help limit the damage done by a backfire. It did very much limit my recent backfire to a small "POP". but the damage done to the hose is from another time!
This all sounds pretty amateurish but needs must ::)

first of all get some inlet stuff from a scrappy - if you're really stuck, post up pics of what is broken, and we'll see what we can do.

You should be able to get an anti backfire valve - but it definately sounds like it needs a tune up

I must have got confused, your first post said 2.6, which is yr 2001 onwards - hence why I suggested the upgrade. On a 1998 car, just patch it up and keep using it ;)

Ah! Yes! The 2.6 was a slip of the finger. It is a T reg 2.5 v6 auto Estate.

I'll try the local scrappy, but last time i looked i was half full of pensioners trycycles!! ;D
I'll try and get a pic though!

I've had a couple of backfires on a mixer system.

Backfire was due to oil in the plug wells, causing the ignition short and pop went the inlet pipes  :(

I bought a new set of pipes and fitted brass flanged tank connectors to each one. this meant that I had effectively a bursting disc fitted.

I fixed the cam cover seal leak, so never experienced how effective it was.

If your LPG system was working OK before, I would look closely at the  integrity of the ignition system first.

Are your inlet pipes short version or long.

I have a new set of short pipes and a used set of short pipes.

PM me if you're interested

Hi!
I'll take note of what you are saying, but I think I was full on the two occasions it has happened to me. Maybe it was a change in liquid gas temperature?
Anyway, thanks for drawing my attention to the fuel situation, I'll take notice, should it happen again. :y

I've been trying to download/upload, whatever it is, a couple of pics, so as to show my setup, but to no avail, is it that difficult? ::)

Help! please in obtaining the replacement air pipes, it seems that evey part of an omega is obtaiable except the air intake pipes! :-[

Thanks for your inputs to my problem.
Now I'm sorted!. Thanks to "issunal" for the Airpipes and Ebay with the anti-backfire valves!
All fitted and working fine with a weekend in Cornwall under the cars belt!
Now, for the million doller question.
Does anyone know where i can get my Emmigas convertion serviced? Bearing in mind i live just about as far southas one can be!
I don't mind a day out or even an overnighter but somewhere withing a hundred miles would be good!

Well!  Having chatted to a few gas installers about my problem.
I have checked my air filter, installed anti-backfire washers, installed a new AGR valve and had both sides of the exhaust manifold gaskets done!

Yesterday on the way back from Bournemouth to Portsmouth running on gas it did it again!!

What makes it all the more difficult for me is that I live on the Isle of Wight and we have no LPG Installers and the ones on the South Coast are only interested in selling their own particular brand of conversion.

I have now fallen out with my Omega!

Anyone want  to buy a 1999 Omega 2.5 v6 Estate? with gas conversion that wants sorting?

My car suffered from backfiring when I first I got it.  Since being properly tuned it has never done it since (over a year ago).

I would suggest getting ahold of the leads and software and have a go at tuning it if you can't find an installer with the right equipment.

Here's a link where you can buy software and leads.  I've never bought off this site but I've seen it recommended in other forums.  Have a scroll down to emmegas and see if it's your model listed.  If it's not I'm sure with a bit more google searching you may find one or alternatively have a look on ebay.
