Omega V6 oil leak
« on: 13 March 2008, 21:45:18 »

Hi, I am after some advice, I am new to this forum and have just had a quick look round, plenty of information and what seems to be very helpful members.

I have an Omega V6 CDX estate with all the toys, I bought it as accident damaged (rear end), the car was repaired after it had been stood for some six months, prior to using the car I replaced oil and filter even though they looked in good order, car drove fantastic for first couple of thousand miles of ownership, wife who thought the car was horrible loved it, exceedingly smooth and very very quiet.

It then sprung an oil leak, minor at first but quickly becoming fast flowing, investigating the leak it was coming off the left hand bank and leaking onto the alternator.

Stripped down breathers, cleaned pipework and replaced rocker cover gaskets, but still leaking.

Mechanic friend of mine came to have a look, ended up stripping down the head as couldn't locate the leak. Having gone through all the things he could think off, including cam kit replacement and water pump etc he rebuilt the engine.

Car fired up, but was running very lumpy, one of the catalytic converters is not heating up and still have oil leak. Is there something he/we are missing? The plenum housing was quite clean but the mechanic noticed very small pieces of what seems like brass, he couldn't understand where it had come from.

For information, on receiving the log book I contacted the previous owner, he advised the engine had been rebuilt by the Vauxhall dealer in his area a couple of months before his unfotunate accident, he had spent nearly £3k on the engine repairs.

My options at the moment are to investigate further or replace the engine, I have managed to locate a 70k unit (mine has done 78k and covered about 4k since the vauxhall rebuild) any advice would be very welcome.

How easy/difficult is it to swap the engine over or am I just creating another headache for myself.

My final option is to cut my losses and sell for spares, this is something I am very reluctant to do, I would like to have this car running again!

Which head did he strip down?

Miss fire following re-assembly sounds like hes not connected leads properly.

Left hand bank (looking from the front), not too sure if it was a misfire but I will have a word with him. He has stripped the head down again to see if he missed anything on the first pass.

Out of intereset would it be simpler to replace the engine, or is this a difficult/time consuming process?

Did your man use a locking kit when he changed the cambelt and tensioners?

Have you had a good look at the cam cover to see if it is split as this does happen to them from time to time.

Garage clear out in March 2011 and I will have a large amount of omega parts going very cheap.

I will ask him to have a look this week, can't check myself as I only have one key... which he has got. Thanks for the reply.

The engine swapping question hasn't raised a response, should I take it that its a tad time consuming and difficult?

I know a garage that has changed these belts without one. He was confident that he'd done it correctly. Although he has done & probably will do some work for me in the future I'll do my cam belt myself when the need arises.  :y
