whirring noise on startup, front passenger side
« on: 16 March 2008, 10:25:17 »

hi all, hope you can advise me:

just recently, on startup, i get a strange loud whirring noise, like a motor of some kind, behind the area where the passengers side fog lamp is. i got under the car yesterday and had a look, there definitely looks like some kind of motor device or pump there but i'm not quite sure what it is.

the noise continues for about 20 seconds or so and then it is as if the motor cuts out and quickly 'whirrs' down again. it is quite loud.

mr haynes doesn't include 'whirr' or 'baffled' in his index or diagrams so wondered if you guys had experienced something similar and could help me diagnose.

thanks in advance for your advice.

Secondary air injection pump which is there to get the cats up to temp quicker (and thus be more efficient), I beleive.

It can simply be unplugged and forgotten about if you don't like the jet engine noise at startup....

Would it cause any damage to unplug for a while and continue to run the car 'til I get it sorted, or is it just to aid efficiency?

Just leave it disconnected. It does nothing important.  As a search of this site would have told you  :P

You could live without for a while, and yes you could go without altogether in theory, but its there for a reason, albeit to improve efficiency and help the environment...so I would replace it soon as you can :)

Piece of cake mate, 4 bolts and remove a connector, bolts are fairly easy to get to and access is pretty good...although may be worth jacking up the front side just to make life easier mate :) Did you want one sending with the rest of the stuff mate?
