Won't rev past 4000 rpm
« on: 22 February 2008, 23:07:02 »

Hi all. I've just picked up a car for my charity rally in April.

It's a 1995 3.0 Elite in good nick etc.

However, driving home I put my foot down to overtake and the auto box kicked down, but when the revs got to about 4000 it cut power and started bouncing the revs up and down! Eeek I thought!  :o

Anyways, I tried revving it after pulling over and in N it won't rev past about 4000, it bounces up and down like there's a rev limiter.

A little concerning, it was bought privately and the guy I bought it off said it hadn't happened to him. Soooo....

Any ideas? Please don't be an expensive fix!  :-[

No EML light, no check lights, everything's peachy apart from the not revving part :|

Yeah, but does the EML come on when you switch on ignition and go out independantly of the oil light?

Oh sorry - Ummm, Yes,  I think the EML light comes on and then goes off. I will check tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure it lights then goes off

Hi

I had the same problem with my omega and it was the crank shaft sensor. I got a new sensor from ebay for about £25 and it takes ago an hour to change if you access it from under the car. Hope this helps

Thanks for the heads up. I've got a local garage that I use, and intended to drop it into them anyways for a good look over.

I'll ask them to change the sensor, and hopefully it'll all be hunky dory.

Apart from the revving issue (Which is pretty major!) everything else works fine :)

The revs are limited when there is either a cam or crank sensor fault.  I imagine replacing the crank sensor will fix it, if not then it'll be the cam sensor.

I have a 95 Elite cam sensor here if you do need it...but most likely worth checking the crank sensor first...

I've done a bit of digging and it seems advice is to replace them both!  So that's going to be my plan.

Hopefully that's it, as I don't really want to spend too much on it. I'll only keep it a couple of months!   :-?
