Alarm ! Holy Crap.
« on: 16 March 2008, 21:30:50 »

Urgent help please.

The soddin' alarm keeps going off on my car.

BUT..its kinda strange. No flashing lights or anything, just a loud electronic type alarm noise..high pitched. Seems to stop if I fiddle with the bonnet cord as it goes past the sounder, which is tucked under the scuttle top left, drivers side. If the cord touches the sounder, would that start it off.

Right now I've had to dis-connect the battery in fear of it goinbg off in the middle of the night..

Can anyone help on this please.

Hi Duggs, your "power sounder" sounds like its on its last legs.
The power sounder had rechargeable batteries in it. Its there to detect if someone trys to disconnect the batery, Once the batteries in it start to go, it gets confused and goes off. Just unplug it mate it wont affect the main alarm.

Really Mark. !

Am I gettin; this right.  If I take the scuttle off the sounder I'm refurring to is way off to the left, ALMOST directly below the round water drain hole.

You're say to ensure that I unplug the power to it and the main alarm will be fune. The funny thing is that I did UNPLUG a plug/black plug that I thought ran to the sounder but at 9.30 tonight..it went off again.

BUT that can be explained by the "rechargeable" battery thing I guess.
Once the rechargeables die.....it won't do it again you're saying IF I don't attempt to charge them up again ??

That's right I think duggs, some people have thought it's location under the water drain isn't great either. A new one is reported to be anything from £60-£120 new from VX.  :-?

......otherwise have a crack at getting hold of and changing the batteries in the sealed unit via some of the excellent previous advice on here.

Hi duggs, Yes mate when i unplugged mine it got the hump for about an hour (until the charge in the battery finally gives up). Make sure you unplug the right wire, there are 2 horns on a bracket one is square shaped (the sounder) the other is a flat disc shaped one(leave this one connected) its part of your alarm. Managed to unplug mine without removing the scuttle, just undid the first nut(next to the wing) then got my hand in there. You will hear the sounder go off if you've unplugged the right wire mate.

The one I unplugged was kinda about 2 inches long x about 10mm thick, black and light blue and it still went off. Perhaps that was the right one BUT went off because the batteries still had a bit of juice. I've unplugged the battery and 2 hours later...it ain't gone off again...Knowing my luck if I've done it wrong it will go off at 3am..

As said, there are two sounders under there. The power sounder has a 4 pin plug with 4 wires going in to it. I believe it's the higher of the two sounders, IIRC

Because it has internal batteries, it may protest for a while. I'd suggest you undo the single bolt that holds it in and take it out. That way, if it protests you can wrap it in a towel.

I take it the alarm sound you're getting is an electronic siren sound of variable pitch, not a car horn type sound?

One More thing to check Duggs.
After you have disconnected the sounder, test your alarm to make sure you get sound from the other horn (the one thats still connected) mine didnt work (duff horn) the lights flashed but no sound. Had to get a new one . must be something to do with being near the rain scuttle (Very damp and wet especially when washing or heavy rain)

Worth checking every few months in winter mate

Yes, it's not a very clever location, and on my power sounder the pins in the connector went through unsealed holes in the plastic case directly to the PCB, so if the seals in the connector leaked the unit is immediately knackered. As it happens, the connector didn't need to leak because the batteries already had.

Thanks guys...spookily, fingers crossed its all sorted now.

I was concerned the way that the bonnet cable ran tight across the sounders and connections. I've neatly put them all back down in the alcove together and loosened the bonnet cable slightly in that area to ensure it isn't tugging or squashing anything.,,since doin' so  this morning its been as good as gold...RIGHT up to the point that the bloody thing will most likely go off at 3am tonight.
