coolant loss
« on: 23 March 2008, 15:18:51 »

been investigating the coolant loss problem,  topped the coolant up this  morning and took car for a run on about 15 miles, when we got back checked it and the coolant  level was down to the bottom of the header tank, have got some Bars rad sealant, will put in when engin cools down, the leek i have noticed is coming from a pipe under the engine, see pic

Also the temp is constant at 95c on the display, obviously the temp goes down when the heater is on, but is that temp ok or too high
can this pipe be replaced or is it a major thing,  :-/
or is it likley that the rad sealant may help.

there doesnt seem to be any leakage from those just at the pipe underneath, i would have put it down to the air con but it wasnt used, so i assume its from this pipe

Only use the unreliable bodge fluids as an utter last resort.  I wouldn't even consider until I had ensured the entire coolant system was tip top.  I leak that big should be not impossible to locate.

Well if its water thats going, I cant think of a water pipe that goes under the engine on either of my V6's?
Are you sure water isn't running down and running onto this pipe?

Not a small leak mate if you are emptying your Reservoir in a few miles run..

More likely to be running out from transfer pipe/hbv/coolant brridge/cooler plate/stat, and running down

Have a look also at the front of the engine to see if the leak is from the water pump..... can't think of anywhere else it could leak from other than what I have already posted..

It might be the top hose where it joins the block just above the power steering pump, I had this go and a new pipe was £20 from Vauxhall. There's an elbow in the pipe that can wear down and when it goes the coolant runs down the side of the engine.

i still could not find the leak, tried the "bodge fluid" ;D, seems to have worked, put the Bars stuff in last nigh and put some ce-lit in this morning and up to know there are no leaks, will keep a very close eye on it tomorrow, fingers crossed. :)
