Non Starter...... :(
« on: 25 March 2008, 18:14:10 »

Hi Guys, got a 98/99 mv6, the problems started the other day when i left the car idling for a while to recharge the battery because im a lazy git... i switched her off and then tried to restart her about an hour later. It turned over no problem at all but just wouldnt fire.

There was no smell of fuel or attempt to fire. I went back the following morning and no problem at all... wierd. Didnt have any problems for a week then it cut out while driving and wouldnt restart again... then 30min later fired up and didnt have any problems. So I ran a code check and got 19. So i think its the crank sensor>

However cannot afford to get a new sensor till tuesday thought id put up with it and go steady.... Now the old girl wont start at all, but whereas before she would just turn, now it fires then dies.... and the ecu light is flashing now whereas before it wouldnt....

One of the guys in the garage thinks it maybe the immob kicking in as it fires then dies...

Anymore ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks
Matt

If you had a code 19 and was having a few probs and now it wont start at all then my money would be on the crank sensor has failed completely :(

crank sensor is the cause of all your problems. it would lead to other problems, but the crank sensor is the route cause.

Replace as soon as you can afford!

Thanks for your replies guys, crank sensor is now ordered.  Also when i pulled the old on out theres was some metal filings on the sensor which worried me as i always try to keep my engine mint! i thought it might be a build up, but popped the sensor back in after i cleaned it tried to start no joy again, but was covered in filings again????

Did you say the EML flashes when you turn ign on? Thats immobiliser.

You need to change that crank sensor, it will let you down at the worse time possible, trust me.

I'd be a little worried about the filings TBH. The magnetic end of the sensor is picking these up from inside the crankcase. Won't affect operation of the sensor much but it does make me wonder what's going on inside there. :-/

Also when i pulled the old on out theres was some metal filings on the sensor which worried me  :-?

I noticed the same thing when i changed my crank sensor recently, not a lot of filings but enough to say the end of the sensor was dirty. I didn't pay too much attention to it at the time thinking it was the original sensor and after 110,000 miles it was bound to be dirty. I did an oil change a couple of weeks before that and the oil was clean still after 6500 miles and no sediment in the filter so i'm not sure whats going on there but it seems to run alright, no rattles or noises. The only problem is the new crank sensor hasn't seemed to make much differance to the rough starting, perhaps it's got some more dirt/filings on it, i'll have to have another look when i get 5 minutes.

Well Ive replaced the sensor to no avail. The car again now fires and then cuts out instantly, takes a wee time to fire but im thinking thinking thats because the ecu hasnt had time to reprogramme since i reset it....?

But yes the EML flashes when on ignition click... how/why would the immobiliser go all of a sudden coincidence maybes??? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to test the moby? Im fairly good with electrics, so im gonna study the wiring diagram tonight see if i can bypass it!!

Also as matter of desperation tried unplugging the AFM as suggested no difference.

Pulled the codes and got a wierd one of what appears to be 145 and of course 31, the 19 has disapeered now.

Help me please Im sick of thinking of intuitive ways of getting to work!

Inside the keyfob is a very small transponder .. fits in a tiny little plastic enclosure type thing ... this needs to be in the right place whilst the key is in the ignition to activate the immobilisor.

Some while back with the old beast I had a similar problem to you, found out the chip had moved - and according to AA chap it happens often, probably if the key is dropped - a small drop of superglue and careful repositioning of the chip and it all worked great - bought the AA man a beer or two for that one .  :)

Don't know if this is your problem but worth a look ??  :)

Dang should type faster .. you sure its missing and not just moved ?? or dropped out when you opened the key ??

I believe you can buy a cheap key from ebay and have it cut by a locksmith .. although you may be able to reuse your present blade ...  then it needs progaramming with a Tech2   .. couple of the guys here have one .. Northants and Nottingham  :)
