Tyre wear...
« on: 04 April 2008, 16:54:37 »

Had the geometry sorted and new tyres on the car last November.  It used to wear the drivers rear like mad on the inside (down to the canvas), and the others were also all worn down to slicks...

Just checked today, the rears are still perfect (pretty much like new) as is the passenger front, but now the drivers front is wearing only on the inside.  The center run of the tyre, and the outside edge is fine.  Just the last 1" of tread on the inside (as it curves round to the sidewall) is worn smooth...

Car had new wishbones prior to me getting it, not sure about droplinks though...

Reckon its worth just getting the alignment done again incase its out, or would it be worth investigating this further, as I can't afford to keep replacing tyres...

Cheers

Get Admin. to consolidate your duplicated post on this one.
Trying to think logically about this, it must be that the tyre is running chiefly on one edge. This may be caused by serious suspension strut failure, but the only answer is to get camber and tracking checked by someone who really knows what they're doing. Surely tracking alone would cause wear more spread across the tyre, and if the wear is so heavily exaggerated on one edge only, cannot the misalignment be detected visually.

Do you have the print out from the last geometry setup?

As you may be aware, I have little confidence in some of these places.

The wear pattern you describe is due to excessive camber on that wheel. If you can find the print-out that will tell us if the camber was set too high (the tolerance used by most alignment centres is far too wide).
The other thing you need to check is the front wishbone bush, if that has split or gone soft then it causes an increase in camber. I know it had new wishbones recently but the bolts might have been tightened with the wheel hanging which causes early bush failures.
