knocking engine
« on: 08 April 2008, 21:04:19 »

Have recently purchased a 1999 2.5 v6 elite with 92500 miles was running fine but has started to make a knocking/tapping noise on idle (very loud) and at revs up to 1500, vauxhall took a stap at piston slap but everybody else diagnosed hydraulic lifters. I had a new set fitted as well as c/belt and tensioners and w/pump. Problem is i still have the noise although not as loud and it comes and goes the warmer it gets i have been told that these engines can suffer from low oil pressure could the oil pump be faulty or the pick up blocked ? has anybody  had or heard of this problem before? thought id ask somebody who knows their stuff before i go back to the garage ie you fellows :y

Could be oil flow. If its a ticking, could be exhaust manifold, though tends to disappear after warm up

If there is knock at the bottom of the engine I would go for cleaning out the oil pick up.  I wouldn't be driving around with it like this, I'm on engine number two after the same problem.  Mine had no knock until it warmed up.  If the oil pressure is low the oil light should start to flicker, does it?

Hmmmm.....very poor diagnosis.

Its rare for more than one follower to fail at once unless there is an oil feed issue.

The first thing that should have been done is an oil pressure test, this is something most garages should be able to do.

Has this engine been flushed with a flushing agent recently?

Its possible that some crudd has been disturbed and its blocking the oil pickup if it has.

car had been standing for a while before purchase and oil was not changed very frequently, drove back from stafford (140 miles ) knocking started next day, when dismantled 3 lifters fell to bits, oil has been changed twice since noise seems to be comeing from top of engine but its deceiving
