HID Fog Lights

Still trawling through past threads being a member for only 2 weeks I found this thread.

After reading the thread from  JonArgraig (sorry if I cant quite remeber your username Jon) and the thread above I fancy the thought of the HID Fogs when I get my Elite.  

When I saw the colour chart from the K rating s for the bulbs it got me into thinking about the reflaction/brightness that bounces back in the really thick gog and then thinking of the yellow type gog lights.

Would a Blue K rated bulb make a differnce for fog driving.

Having never had or driven a car with HID fitted , am I taling out the top of my head.  Just a thought but would be interested in others thoughts.

Hi,
The fog lamps are not HID they are just Xenon filament bulbs in them.

It's the dip beam headlights only that are HID

The thread was regarding a HID fog light converion with the Ballasts that I was interested in, also  JonArgraig was talking about the HID/Ballast conversion in annother thread.

Doubt it would make to much difference to the actual performance although HID's do output more light.

The key requirement for an effective fog light is that it needs to be close to the ground to get under the fog (fog rarely actulay gets right to the deck) and unlike many modern cars, the Omega ones are pretty low.

Do beware though, fog lights are an uncontrolled light source (i.e. they are not checked or adjusted routinely and the beam pattern is pretty basic) and hence why it is illegal to drive with them on under normal visiability due to the fact that they will dazzle quite easily so the extra light available from a discharge lamp could really piss other drivers off!

I was chatting to bro the other day about why is it most cars only have dipped beam as HIDs (the sorts of cars he is a designer for have full beam HIDs as well) - its to do with heat disipation both off the lenses (which I couldn't understand as they use less power  :-/) and the ballast packs.

Lol, not an elecronic eng is he......

The reality is that the life of a HID is not so much time limited but cycle limited i.e. they only give a certain number of on/offs.

And as you can imagine, supporting full beam results in a lot of cycles.

Hence why on some cars they use a solenoid shutter on the dip beams to support full beam using HID's on the same bulb.

The bubs themselves run at MUCH lower temperature so cant see heat being an issue.

The truth is I am a bit hoarder and collector.  My latest faze is collecting those little star things under my username, I want to see how many I can get by the end of the month....lol  ;D  (hehe, 215 now)

As many as i can pinch from my local, saw that car in the flesh at the autosport show last year its a lot smaller in real life than you would think
