AutoBox Oil & Filter Change
« on: 15 April 2008, 23:42:09 »

Does anyone know what is required and where is the best place to purchase replacement sump gaskets/filters for my 2.0 98 autobox.

I'm going to give vx a ring tomorrow but I know they are generally quite dear at my branch. Also can the filter be flushed/reused.

Im guessing the change is as strraight forward as to drain as much as possible then remove the sump and get covered in the rest, then clean and fit new gaskets then refil as normal??

AR25 / AR35 gearboxes use identical gasket and filter  :y

Your theory is correct, remember to start the car and select each gear for a 10 seconds or so the columns can fill up with fluid, ideally you need to keep toping up while doing this.

Try Opie Oils for the ATF, Fuchs ATF 4000 is the one MDTM recommends I think.

If its the same box .. as VXL says ..  there are TWO sumps, 1 large, 1 small, so you need both gaskets and the filter .. just as I did .. :)

Oh and before you do anything, try and undo the fill / level plug as there appear to be a fair few that are torqued up way too much from the factory. If you can't get the plug off and you discover that after you've drained the fluid......

There's a chap who advertises in the back of straight 6 news. That's where I got mine from. 35 quid including postage IIRC.

Thanks everyone. Didnt get round to ringing my vx today as been a little bit busy (now need a beer), will try them tom and in the mean time I will drop jpat a line.

The sump plug is fine as I've already had it out to top up only a couple of weeks ago. Now decided that it could do with the full change/flush as this may sort one of my problems. Ive always suspected the thrust washer but now Ive found out that the tinkering noise is actually from my cat and not the box, so its ideal time to change oil and check for any components in the sump.

Also I believe this could be the reason why she sorta of struggles on hills but is great on the flat. As soon as u see a steep hill the power appears to drain and am thinking that this may be caused by the filter being blocked and not alowing the oil flow due to the oil running to the back of the box. May be wrong but its worth a try I think.

The filter can be cleaned using petrol/parafin or the like - at 20 quid its worth doing if not too bad.

You'll find the bits if there are any in the small sump (so I believe), so make sure you do that too.

Yep, thrust washer debris will drop into the little sump, so pull that off first so you know where you stand. (whether to take the big sump off next or the whole box)

That sounds more like poor fuel flow to me. Try the fuel filter.
