i pulled into vauxhalls, got me bits, got in car and put in reverse and nothing, like it was still in neutrel. its booked in tomorrow to have autobox fluid top up. is this what the problem is, not enough fluid as its not done it before and i did lose a little when i changed rad.
it only did it the once and seems ok now though.

I would keep an eye on it as this is how mine started before i found out that the box was tits.

Have a look at the selector switch it might be it just needs cleaning.

I am unaware of lack of oil causing problems with the reverse gear. lack of oil tends to cause the box to be hesitant.

let us know what happens at the vx garage. i wld be inclind to stay and watch them do the job. ( just to make sure they do it correctly)

Sod the top-up, do a full change, with gaskets. Around £60 DIY for fluid and gaskets.

Thinking about it the oil might be old and worn this would deffinatly not help the box.

Good time to inspect the Thrust washer too.....

nope you need to jack the car up to get to it im afraid. i hav never removed aselector switch so i can t adivse how to take it off sorry.

no worries, thanks anyway marie. i think im going to need to clean mine up a bit at some point in the not-too-distant. will scout around the forum and consult with mr haynes!

thanks for all the advice peeps. everything seems fine when driving, i took it down a long open rd near me yesterday afternoon with m8s dad whos a mechanic and the gears where changing well.
1 thing. i kicked it to the floor at 100 and it took off.  
 m8 has car and is going to get the nut off for me and see where we go from there.

You can get them for 35 shipped from a chap who advertises in straight 6 news. Or drop the sumps and seal with RTV sealant perhaps?

Hopefully low fluid is the problem, then. Fingers crossed.

well its a good job i come on hear and read all these threads

i spoke to the bloke while it was up. he said my head gasket is leaking, i spilt oil when i filled it up last week. and probably the solenoid has gone or i need a new gearbox. i started quoteing a few things ive read on here and he stopped talking after that.

Reverse was 1st to go when I drove through flood. Other than that worked fine, Lining came off clutch. Water in fluid.

ISTR someone mentioning that reverse gear has the highest demand for transmission fluid too, so if it's low, reverse packs up first.

Head gaskets on these engines only leak water, it's very unlikely that one will leak oil.
