Coolant leak - HBV?
« on: 15 April 2008, 15:04:53 »

Hi,

Whilst the Meega has been in my garage for the last month or more  while I did the Wishbones and Exhaust (all now done as of Sunday night). I have noticed a slight coolant leak. About a table spoon per week on the floor - had a look and it appears to be dripping down the nearside gearbox housing and also a bit dripping off the nearside exhaust flange where the cat joins the engine. This has been while the engine is cold (not been run for weeks so system not under pressure).

First guess is that it might be the Heater Bypass Valve, but other than taking this off (ie windscreen wipers and scuttle etc. is there a way to check? If I have to take it out to check it then I might as well put a new one in (£14 on fleabay).

You can see it and feel it with scuttle on to see if its wet/leaking or not ;)

Mark,
If you do change it, worth forking out for a new original 25-30 quid from Vx.   Aftermarket ones have been known to fail quickly and dump all your coolant very quickly.

Thanks guys,

Will check it out.  This is the HBV on e-bay from Vauxhall parts warehouse:-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vauxhall-Heater-Valve-Bypass-90566947-Omega-CorsaB_W0QQitemZ190212212417QQihZ009QQcategoryZ10404QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQ_trksidZp1638.m118.l1247QQcmdZViewItem

would that be an aftermarket one or VX genuine?

Dazzler, yes nice to know there's some Meega owners in this part of the country.

Had a look today as car has been standing level since Sunday - no sign of any coolant on the floor. Also checked the HBV and this appeared dry.

So will now take it for it's mot on Saturday but keep an eye on the coolant level - maybe it's just one of those things that sort themselves (for a bit)!
