emissions
« on: 19 April 2008, 19:47:55 »

Good evening all
I have a pal who is not online that has a 3.0 v6 and it has failed the emissions test on the MOT today, the print out says

1, Exhaust emissions carbon monoixde content at idle exessive
2, Exhaust emissions carbon monoixde content AFTER 2nd fast idle exessive
3, Exhaust emissions Hydrocarbons after 2nd fast idle exessive
4, Exhaust emissions lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specific limits.

Can any body tell me what these mean, and does it mean the cats are fooked.

Or is it something silly that has failed. ::)

I await with baited breath. Good health to you all.

i think it might be the lambda sensor giving faulty signals to the ecu

I'm not going to promise this will work but...

I normally get cars to pass emissions by giving a full service (including plugs) and sticking some injector cleaner through when there's only about quarter of a tank. Then drive it like you stole it!  ;D ;D ;D

Go straight to the test station and do not switch off until the test is done!

9 times out of 10 i find this works, unless you have serious engine management issues!

have you given the car a good ragging before the test.

Loads of short journys dont help the cat. a good blow out of the cat will help it. ( well not litterally)

just take the car for a good blast, and as lazydocker has said a service normally helps to. when was it last done?

The lambda value being wrong does suggest the fuel mixture before the cat is not right. Has he got any trouble codes stored?

The car has just had a full service including timing belt kit and oil/filter change/plugs/air filter and leads but not the fuel filter, although i dont think that will affect the emissions. could it be the lambda sensors or even maf?.  Fuel consumption is down as well. ::)

i will try and get the codes read this week., the eml is not on.
