My 2000 facelift 2.0 remote key wont work but the central locking is fine when i use it in the door.I changed the battery in the key but to no avail. The boot release button on the key has stopped working aswell.

Sounds like you may need to resync the key to the car :-/

If the light is coming on it is almost a sure fire indication that the fob is working ok.
What I have learnt from years of mucking about with motorbikes is that the most simple reason is usually the right one.

So................

Try checking the fuses that control the locking system first.

another thought.... does the central locking work ok with the key (all round) and the button on the door?
