2.5 TD ECU Fault Code
« on: 15 March 2008, 20:55:12 »

I tried the paper clip test on my Omega today and had the following fault code:

64 FUEL QUALITY CONTROL OUT OF RANGE

The Engine Management Light also lights up very briefly when changing gear at low revs, and when I lift off after driving at a steady speed.

Are the ECU fault code and the engine management light issue related?

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

The car is a 96 2.5 TD Manual

Yup.

Recommend to remove feul filter, empty it, fill it with Diesel Magic, and start the car (it will run rough for a minute or so while its drinking the diesel magic), and see where you go from there...

Hi Haydn,
It must be something in the air here in South Wales - my 2.5TD is doing exactly the same thing.
I've fully-serviced mine, but the problem persists.
I strongly suspect that the problem is within the fuel tank, either a build-up of crud in the pick-up area, or a dirty pick-up strainer. To access either of these entails removing the pump unit, but to date I've failed to do so. However, whenever I've delved into the fuel tank, the car performs faultlessly in the immediate aftermath, and with no engine management light coming on.
'Marks DTM' kindly posted a drawing but I'm sure this is for a petrol-
powered car.
SOMEONE MUST KNOW HOW TO GET THE PUMP UNIT OUT OF THE TANK - I'd love to hear from them.

I suspect its something in the very expensive main injection pump  :-X

My car also has the very same problem.

I took the electric fuel pump out of the tank following the 'no cost' route, but the guaze filter was pretty clean. This is a bit tricky as there is a plastic connector with a pipe leading to the bottom of the tank. To remove this you simply compress the looped plastic clip and it releases. However getting it back on was difficult and in the end I lost the plastic loop, although it then clipped together okay. I don't think I will be able to get it apart again. Never mind I can always do the following:

I think the diesel magic in the fuel filter is the next step.

Did you try this and if so did it clear the problem?

I didn't use Diesel Magic.
I filled the fuel filter with Forte, and althogh it didn't entirely solve the problem, it certainly helped.
When the fuel-level in mine gets a bit lower, I'll have another crack at removing the in-tank pump. Removing the ribbed pipe from the T-connector really is trying my patience - and I also couldn't get the retaining clip back in to place. There has to be a way of detaching it, and someone must know how it's done ..... !

I'd say injection pump, especially if it's slow to start after being sat hot.
Exaccerbated by using petrol.

Mine ran ok with eml showing on overrun, ok if you don't accelerate while on or else limp home mode. However one sunny morning thinking I was filling skiboat chose unleaded,
After that no hot start got so bad I had to lock the car outside shops with the engine running , or else wait 45 mins. Got an elite for the price of a pump, car retired.

Hi sethsmate, I will take it as read you removed everything exept the pump, to remove the pump you have to hold the wiring that goes to the pump then you have to release ALL THREE CLIPS that hold the pump in AT THE SAME TIME otherwise the pump will not come out.

Thanks - but I've got the pump to begin releasing, only to be stopped by not being able to release the ribbed pipe from the T-connector at the top of the pump unit. This is after removing the retaining clip.
Any idea on how to release this pipe - ? Thanks.

Regarding the ribbed pipe removal. The oval release clip should not have been removed. It should have been squeezed inwards which distorts the plastic connection outwards thus releasing the ribbed pipe. I did this and the pipe came off no problem. However, it is difficult to get back together. In my impatience I pushed it back together without the oval removal clip in place. Can't get it apart now.

My qauze was not blocked and appears to be the only serviceable bit.
If your pump is working, easily checked if somewhat messy, I would not bother going any further down this route
The pump is over 100 quid from VX to replace so if yours is broken you can either shell out or use the link I gave earlier. ;)
