Starting/Immobiliser/Crank Problem
« on: 21 April 2008, 21:50:46 »

Dont know if anyone can help on this one.

Recently my 2.0 Auto has now and again been a pig to start. It acts as if the starter is stuck by just making a cliking noise (when doing this the Toad Immobiliser wont disengage i.e light wont go solid). After holding the key for about twenty clips it fires once and dies. Do this two or three times and then put the fob on the immobiliser it starts and is then ok for a few days.

Today it did the same, but once it fired it was running on three cylinders then stalled. Restarted straight away and appeared to be ok. Drove off and after 100 yrds it stalled and brought the eml on. Started again and reved up and light went off. Drove home no problems but decided to do a paperclip test anyway.

It only shows one code and that is 0335 (crank sensor). This was replaced three weeks ago for a new one, but unfortunatly its one ive had about a yeat and is out of warranty  :-/

Do you think this is just a case of a new crank sensor required, a new starter motor or is it the immobiliser????????? HELP  ;D

Two questions

1) Was it a genuine crank sensor?

2) Is it fitted nice and snugly in the hole?  ::)

Yes it was a genuine, however I cant say if it was a snug fit as my brother fitted it, but on asking him he says it was.

Might be worth giving it a bit of a wiggle to make sure.

Also, check the cabling is no where near the alternator.

I know the cabling was well clear of everything, as we had to reroute it up the engine due to the end not fiting through the gap the original one came out of (cut end off old one).

Would the alternator interfere with it??

Will stick my hand down and move it around tomorrow lunch.

U dont think its the imobiliser then that may be causing it. I take it the crank sensor being faulty would stop the engine turning over??

No. It'll turn over on the starter but not start.

Ummmm so it is possible that either the starter motor is on its way out and that the immobiliser is faulty. Looks like I need to find another starter motor to try out on it before buying a new one.

Sorry ....  just re-read your original post. I was assuming original immobiliser & hadn't noticed you had an aftermarket fitted. Not knowing how the Toad has been fitted I'd have to say I don't know.

Methinks there may be unrelated problems here .... :(

Clicking of start relay and not "turning over"

1. After market immobilisor playing up ??
2. Battery voltage low or poor connection
3. Start relay FUBAR
4. Starter Motor FUBAR

Not firing once turning over, and EML light on

1. After market immobilisor playing up ??
2. Crank Sensor

:(

Sorry, missed the bit about a a generally poorly installed and pain in the arse aftermarket immobiliser (I dont see the point in them given there is a good Cat 2 unit factory fitted).

If the starter motor is clicking and not turning then this sudgests two possible causes.

1) The battery feed is suspect (12V or 0V so check both)

2) The starter is playing up.
