Hi Gang, need help urgently
The wife has a 1998 2.0 16v and its been running ok since we got it. Its a bit thirsty (17.2 mpg overall per tank) but it spends 90% of its life doing the school run.
The other day, while driving it "twitched" then the Engine management light came on, but carried on running ok with no restrictions.
Yesterday the missus went to work and when she went to drive home it was a pig to start (after being parked for 7 hours).
Today I did a plug and leads swap on it to see if that would cure it. 3 plugs/leads were ok but the one nearest the dizzy had oil in the well so I guess she needs a new rocker cover gasket. Cleaned it up before installing the new lead/plug.
Went to start it after the plug swap and it was a pig still. Once I got it started it sounded/felt like it ran on 3 cylinders so I double checked everything. Finally got it started (AGAIN) and decided to go for a drive to see what happened.
It drove ok ish, feels like its struggling and twitching/murmering when accelerating.
Then I gave it a boot full in 2nd and it got to 4500rpm and it started acting as if a rev limiter had come on. Same in 3rd gear too.
So based on that, whats the opinion? What should I be looking at next?
Doesnt look like these have a coil so theres no lead for that, i'm sure its something electrical but my knowledge is limited to basic servicing.
Any help or advice is appreciated. Really need to get this sorted coz its the kiddy carrier and we are stuck without it (3 kids, 2 schools).
