Hi Gang, need help urgently

The wife has a 1998 2.0 16v and its been running ok since we got it. Its a bit thirsty (17.2 mpg overall per tank) but it spends 90% of its life doing the school run.

The other day, while driving it "twitched" then the Engine management light came on, but carried on running ok with no restrictions.

Yesterday the missus went to work and when she went to drive home it was a pig to start (after being parked for 7 hours).

Today I did a plug and leads swap on it to see if that would cure it. 3 plugs/leads were ok but the one nearest the dizzy had oil in the well so I guess she needs a new rocker cover gasket. Cleaned it up before installing the new lead/plug.

Went to start it after the plug swap and it was a pig still. Once I got it started it sounded/felt like it ran on 3 cylinders so I double checked everything. Finally got it started (AGAIN) and decided to go for a drive to see what happened.

It drove ok ish, feels like its struggling and twitching/murmering when accelerating.

Then I gave it a boot full in 2nd and it got to 4500rpm and it started acting as if a rev limiter had come on. Same in 3rd gear too.

So based on that, whats the opinion? What should I be looking at next?

Doesnt look like these have a coil so theres no lead for that, i'm sure its something electrical but my knowledge is limited to basic servicing.

Any help or advice is appreciated. Really need to get this sorted coz its the kiddy carrier and we are stuck without it (3 kids, 2 schools).

Hi there Hamster.
Have you done the paperclip test, there is a guide on the how to.  As for the limiter  at 4500revs it sounds like the cam or the crank sensor, the paperclip test will let you know which or both. The cam sensor is easy but the crank sensor is a bit more work if you have air-con. But doable,The oil in the plug well is down to the cam cover gasket, easy job , get GM parts plus the black sealant, also clean out the ICV and pipes that go to the cam cover, again there is a how to on here As for the 17mpg, it must be doing short trips, give it a good run after you do the jobs

Is your omega a manual or auto. 17 mpg doing a school run is very high. How many miles does she do for the school run and how far is it to work? Also change the fuel filter, air filter and change the oil it does make a difference. As said above clean the IACV (idle air control valve) and clean the breathers as well.

cheers peeps. Car is a manual with 80k on the clock

School and work runs are only about 5 miles a day round trip so 17 mpg is bad. We sold our v6 coz that was doing 18mpg but I expected that.

Took it to a mate with a plug in code reader tonight but it showed no codes at all, wether the engine was running or not.

He suggested it could be 1 of several things.

Timing
dizzy pack
sensor
dropped a valve

I doubt its mechanical as it runs ok at idle and with slow acceleration it runs fine. A blip of the throttle at idle makes it run lumpy up to 2k then it smoothes out.

Starting is the main problem. When its cold it starts no problem but when its warm its almost like the engine wasnt to sieze as it seems out of sinc. You have to stop turning it over coz it feels like its going to lock up but then other times it will turn over and eventually start.

Will do a paper clip test on it to see what shows up. I'm praying its just a sensor or the dispack.

I saw on VVOC that a guy had a faulty crank sensor and it wouldnt run past 4500rpm so fingers crossed its just that.

Keep the suggestions coming tho, the more help the better.

Most likely to be the camshaft sensor at fault.  Need to do a paperclip test to confirm though.  Not all code readers work with this car, the garage I went to couldn't get a code to come up when the paperclip test did.

Hi Mark, we are in Grantham which is lincolnshire but its an NG postcode.

Right on the border of lincolshire, Notts and leicestershire.

Top man, I just did the paper clip test and got a 1502 and 0335 so a new crank sensor has been ordered.

I've read the 1502 is immobiliser related but does anyone know what exactly the code relates to?

Clean the breathers thoroughly according to the guide - you will find it makes an astonishing difference.

There is a guide in the maintenance area on breather cleaning...

The crank sensor can cause some strange fault codes to be raised when it starts to throw the towel in.
