Problem with auto gearbox
« on: 24 April 2008, 13:16:58 »

Hi,

My brother in laws Omega has a problem with the gearbox and we arent sure how serious it would be to fix.

Its a T reg 2.5 V6 GLS auto and its not changing gears when in drive and doesnt seem to go over 2500rpm. He has to manually go through 1st, 2nd, 3rd and then drive and all the lights on the side of the gear lever are continually lit.

Has anyone come accross this and if so, does it means its f**cked or is it a basic fault.

Thanks for any help.

Sounds like the selector might be FUBAR - previous reports of misbehaving lights indicate this.

I believe the switch is "cleanable" with care, although it looks like most folks replace with one from a "breaker"

Have you driven through standing water recently ?? This seems to do the selector a lot of harm !!! :)

Does the EML light come on at all ?? If so it will probably need a tech2 to read the gearbox ... "cheapo" and "paperclip" don't read the gearbox AFAIK..

Almost certainly gearbox selector switch. I had exactly the same problem recently and replacement selector switch sorted it.

Do the "paperclip" test anyway to check out the EML codes .. takes but a few minutes ... let us know the result .. you MAY have more than one problem ......  :(

Thanks guys, will do the paperclip tets tonight just to see.

Any idea how much a selector switch costs, or is it something that can be obtained from a breakers?

Cheers

I think to buy new they're in the region of £150 but you could try looking in the Car Parts Bits For Sale & Wanted section on this forum or try a breakers. There are quite a few good online breakers search engines such as www.partsgateway.co.uk or www.breakeryard.com that you could try.

I doubt if it's the selector switch

Have you tried oiling it? when mine did that i oiled the gearstick and it started working again

maybe it just needs oiling

When the lights on the gearbox lever light up like a christmas tree it tends to be the selector switch.

you can remove it quit easily from the box and dry it out clean it and re oil it.

i will go and get a picture of one now for you brb :)

Edit:

Here you go..............
