if you diy you must get rid of all rust otherwise you will be wasting your time. As you are going back to bare metal i would recomend using a good etch primer. Paint wise you could go to Vx with the paint code, they usually supply it in basecoat colour with a seperate clear, some local paint mixers may even fill an aerosol with any colour you want, good tip is to leave the car in the sun for a while as it is easier to spray onto a warm panel  :y

The last time I suffered from this fault was on a 3.0 CD Senator, which is a common problem with them and any still on the road.  I investigated at the time (1998) at a Vx dealer how much it would cost to replace the whole panel; £1,000 EACH side was the answer! :'( :'(

If it had not been for that I would not have gone on to an Elite Omega, keeping instead a wonderful car :y.

£250 per side therefore sounds a reasonable quote to me for Vx to
do the job, but obviously it will be MUCH cheaper if you can do the job yourself (I wouldn't as I am hopeless at body repairs/ respraying! :'()

All the best :y

I wouldnt bother going to vx to get work done i had a new bonnet and bumper done by them and within 6 months it looked like someone had just fired stones at it for a week and on the edges it was starting to rust. So obviosly for one not done right and two not enough paint or laquer, crap waste of time they also forgot to connect my fan back up water temp was going through the roof!!! Hear so many bad stories about main dealers its a joke what is it with them.

No decent bodyshop will let you do this. The prep work is whats responsible for a good finish so if you didnt do it perfect, the finish wouldnt look as good and from a bodyshops point of view (if its a good one) they could lose their reputation.

I also have bitter experience of this with 2 Senators and would say £250 each side is very cheap. Does this also include replacing both inner wheel arches ? Because this is where the rust first takes hold. By the time you spot the bubbles starting on the outside the real problem and horror story is hidden within. Unfortunately this job is really either all or nothing. If you just remove the rust on the outside it will be straight back within 2-3 months and you will have wasted your time money and effort. You need to remove and replace both inner wheel arches which is where the problem will have started. I recon about £500-£600 per side is more realistic. I did this on 2 Senators where this really was a curse that allicted everyone of them sooner or later (usually sooner). The Omega is much better but unfortunately it still occasionally happens. Try and find a bodyshop that does vehicle restorations as most mainstream places wont want the job due to the aggrivation of having you return with the rust bubbles reappearing 3 months down the line. I used a small place that fitted in the Senators between restoring old Triumph Spitfires (so they really knew about rust). Sorry if this is not what you want to hear but this is not a easy problem to solve.

I spent years working in Bodyshops and I would never have sprayed anyone elses work. Because it would always come back and bite you!

The problem with rust repairs is unless you can remove every single trace it will return, sometimes very quickly. Rust inhibiter is a waste of money.

Idealy you would want to get new metal to replace the rusted parts, either new arches or new metal welded in.

I've been out of the trade for some years now but for £250 each side I want a very good job with some kind of guarantee that new metal was used.

Some cowboys  would bodge in fibre glass and filler and the finished article could  be very difficult to  tell to the untrained eye.
