Sagging rear.
« on: 28 April 2008, 00:25:43 »

Will new shocks solve the problem or is it due to the springs being tired and have dropped a bit. The bounce check gives two movements after stopping downward pressure. The car feels wallowy and pitches on roundabouts etc.
I reckon it must have done a fair bit of towing in it's time. It has 96k on the clock and a new clutch and DMF recently.
I'd like to change shocks and springs all round and upgrade to slightly stiffer over standard, but I don't want to lower. Will upgraded shocks do the job. I know ride height is predominantly controlled by the springs, but do the shocks assist.
Any suggestions on what to go for ?
Cheap and cheerfull if possible. I have a limited amount of filthy lucra at the moment !!

I forgot to mention, the rear is a good inch lower than it used to be.

Sounds like the shocks, I've fitted the kyb gas a just on mine and they seem to work ok, and it was an easy job for once

Shocks only affect ride height if they are the gas pressure type or if the car is fitted with self-levelling suspension.

The single most common cause of low ride height on the Omega is broken springs. You need to get underneath and feel around both springs, they should spiral inwards at the ends and finish about 2 inch in diameter, often this bit breaks off.

KYB springs seem to be good quality replacements.

They're std shocks, not self levelling.
I have Monroe shocks all round on my other miggy, but I'm not sure if it'll be false economy to swap them over as the springs are 40mm lowered, so they won't be going on, and the Monroes have done about about 40k.
Does anyone know what the plod mobiles had fitted ?  I'm pretty sure they had a stiffer set up.

I've also noticed tonight that my car is higher on the off-side rear, only by 10mm, than the near-side rear. (Has self levelling)

I don't know why, perhaps new shocks are in order, or is this more likely a tired / broken spring?

I`ve just fitted a new set of rear springs to mine, much better now, it`s not a hard job but you need two people one to help leaver the rear arm down while the other does the spring. mine cost £65 for the pair.
