Gear box or diff?????
« on: 28 April 2008, 14:27:06 »

Hi when pulling off from a junction car occasionally gives a bit of a thud from the back and sometimes revs but doesnt move then all of a sudden feels like it catches a cog and thuds and moves off again all other gears are fine not sure whether this would be diff or gearbox. What you guys think and how much to fix and how hard is the job? Many thanks in advance for help.

I get the thump when I boot my car when I move it out of reverse. I'm waiting for some good weather so I can take off my exhaust heat shield and see if my prop mount is away. I heard from someone else on oof that their prop mount was away, same age and engine as my one. Its my only option since I had everything else checked out.

Sounds like classic symptoms of the traction control kicking in to me. Try it with it turned off.  ;)

No, it wouldn't. Didn't spot that.  :-[

My first check would be tha auto gearbox fluid level. If it's sucking air due to low fluid level I guess it could be dropping out of gear briefly.

Fuchs Titan 4000 from Opie. You'll need 7 litres or so.

Probably worth changing fluid if the history is unknown although if you're not going to get round to it soon I would check the level ASAP.

Level change involves filling to the bottom of the level plug on the driver's side of the car, while the car is level and the engine is running. Similar setup to a manual gearbox / diff filler / level plug.

Gearbox most likely.  Any gearbox codes on MID?

Replace fluid, see what happens. Don't drive for too long like it, you'll bugger the box.

No warnings or anything strange, could it be a leak as rocker covers are getting changed as they ar eleaking and as you would no when quite a bit of oil under car its hard to tell where its come from.

I had a td that did that for 40k mls . Changing from rev to fwd. Or booting it after standing on brakes for roundabout. V annoying but worked around it. never figured the cause.

Probably low fluid level. If you stand on the brakes all the fluid gets thrown to the front of the box and leaves the pump intake high and dry. Fluid pressure falls and the box drops out of gear.
