I'm sure I did it with a CIH Manta, but there again there were somewhat fewer pistons & valves to play with.

Ah the joys of putting an engine together then realising you have to strip half of it back down again.

We've all been there. >:( Better than discovering it when you come to start it up.

Lol, I have put all the top end back together without fiting the cam wheels before!

There is something very rewarding about stripping down a problem engine, cleaning it and re-assemblingit into a clean and re-furbished state.......I enjoyed working on TB's 3.0 at the weekend

I spent hours changing the engine on a Vectra GSI few months ago only to find as soon as I filled it with coolant the thermostat housing was cracked and leaking so stripped most of it down to fix that.

Hi, Just a thought!
Presuming you don't have the cambelt fitted yet.

As the camshafts turn at half speed of the crankshaft, I would have thought that instead of having to remove the cams and covers again if you could turn camshafts back quarter turn you would be to approx where they should be with the crankshaft in it's present position.

So, If you turn the crankshaft a/clock just a few degrees to get all pistons down in the bores clear of the valves, then turn each camshaft quarter turn a/clock then return crankshaft back to its 180 deg out position, the crank and camshafts should all be in relatively the right positions to each other.

If you then fit cambelt so you can then turn the whole lot together to get crankshaft to its correct position then check / adjust the camshafts exact to their correct positions.

I admit that I have never tried this myself, and I would turn any of the shafts very carefully, but it's worth a try if my theory is correct.

The problem is, to time up the belt you still have to rotate the crank through 180 degrees without the cams connected to it. This will bring at least 3 cylinders through top dead centre and some of them will have valves open. The only 100% safe way is to remove the cams so all of the valves are closed while you turn the crank.

I agree, and I fancied a project like this which I why I'm rebuilding a knackered generator engine at the moment. It's not much fun TBH due to the crank case being made of the finest Chinese Emmental. I should have known what I was up against when I spotted a chapter on helicoiling in the maintenance manual. ::)
