Clutch tyres and headlights
« on: 08 May 2008, 08:12:43 »

Hi  - I am new to Omegas and have some simple questions I would appreciate help with regarding my '94 TD estate:
Is the clutch pretty straightforward? I assume the gearbox linkage is as per the other posts here.
My headlights are useless. It looks like theplastic lenses have degraded with UV lilght or something but they are 'cloudy'. Is this normal? Is there a solution or is it replacement? Do HID lights units fit?
My tyres are all worn on the inside edges. Whilst I know I have a worn track rod end, do Omegas have a history of eating tyres especially with old suspension? I have 162k on the clock and the car is feeling a little bit soggy all round.
Thanks in anticipation - sorry for the long first post

Him cant help with gear linkage as I have an auto.
Early headlamps are usless, as you say the lenses fade & beam pattern goes. cheapes & simplest remedy is to fit a pir off a later model, 1997 to 1999 with the projector type set up. Yours would not have HID's either. Tyre wear as you say is mostly down to steering alignment. The omegas seem prone to front wishbine bushes wearing, mainly due to the amount of weight onthem. Again in my case I fitted a new pair of wishbones & have had no problems with tyre wear since

Hi Julian, welcome to the forum. The clutch on a TD is a job I shall be tackling this summer as mine is (almost) dead - as far as I know its fairly straightforward to do.

The headlamps get a little crazed on the surface, to remedy mine I used very fine (1500 grit) paper and T-Cut to take the outer layer away and installed Osram Nightbreaker bulbs - I would say this improved the lights by about 30%.

My tyres were also worn on inner edge - worse on the front of a TD than others as the engine is real heavy (pig iron). I replaced track rods, steering idler, wishbones and drop links. The parts cost around £100 all in and can be fitted yourself.

162k on the clock - plenty more to go there. You will notice a massive difference if you carry out all the work mentioned above.

Good Luck!  :y

Hi All
Thanks for the info - much appreciated. I now know what to look out for. I have just changed a drop link and the difference even with just that not knocking and clinking was suprising. Glad I'm not doomed to lousy lights too.
I'll update when its all done - any clues regarding clutch suppliers?

Cheers
Julian

If you fit the projector 'mini-facelift' headlamp units (all plug and play) you can also install some HID lights which drop in great and will then see a 1000% improvement! Price for headlamps shouldn't really be anymore than about £40-50.

The omega is a heavy car, although the suspension tends to wear really well, the miles inevitably take their toll. As platty says, freshen up that front end and with proper wheel alignment you should see a marked improvement.

All the best  :y

Clutch is fairly easy to do on your own mate but whatever you do DO NOT BUY A VXHALL RECONDITIONED unit!! you will have judder and jumping its awful!!
LUK is a good bet at reasonble price be aware the dmf do wear out so make sure yours is good before you start and as a matter of interest
the V6 clutch bolts straight into the td setup easy upgrade if your chipping it!!
