Most likely plugs and leads.

hi

new plugs and leads fitted  20k miles ago  car appears to be ok when cold gets worse when hot.    appears to be an air leak under the top plastic cover would this affect the running  ??????

Yes, air leaks affect running.

If you carefully squirt something like carb cleaner or brake cleaner solvents onto the plastics you will be able to pinpoint where the leak is by the change in engine note and then remedy leak.

One culprit is an incorrectly seated idle control valve.  Right side of engine intake plenum, opposite side from throttle housing.

If you can hear an air noise from under the plenum then most likely the special little o ring that seals the bit that sticks out on the bottom of the airbox where it inserts into the top of the plenum...about £2.50 from Vaux but you may need to take your old one in to show them what you need...and grease the new one to help stop it splitting when you put the parts back together :)
