How do I tell?
« on: 21 May 2008, 14:09:31 »

Hello all, new boy here!  :)

... and straight away I'm on the take from you all.  I'm hopefully picking up a '99 MV6 this weekend, but before I part with my hard earned, is there an easy way to tell that it's an X30XE engine fitted and not just an X25XE.

Is there somewhere on the block that says it in plain english, or do I have to cross reference it's engine number (underneath, to the rear right of the engine if I remember rightly!).

The log book has it as a 3.0l, but I just wanna make sure.

Cheers,

Col.

Hello and a warm welcome to you! :y

Apart from the log book that should indicate the cc's, the stamping on the engine, another way to tell is 3 ltrs have a twin piped exhaust back box.

I am sure our engine experts on this site will also give you further more technical pointers of the differences between the two engines :y

All the best.

If its a 1999 3.0 it will have a longer Plenum on :y
2.5's plenums finish about level with the Cambelt Cover, 3.0's hang around 3 inches over :y

All 99 MV6 are 3.0 unless you suspect its had and engine transplant.

Hi Col and welcome to OOF. :) The engine cubic capacity will be stated in the V5C Registration Certificate. :y

if you look where the engine number is as you said under the engine beside oil filter it will say x30xe or x25xe right beside engine number  :y

3.0 has longer plenums as stated but also the gearbox number is R28 but there is a way to tell the Engine type from the MID setup there is a guide on the forum asto what the MID config equates to if you hold the two buttons on the end of the wiper stalk this will display the ecu config

the only true way to establish what you have fitted currently is to find the engine number......

Technically it would be possible to fit a 2.5 where a 3.0 has been, however if you do not believe the engine has been changed then i would go with the log book or some of the other identifiers that have been mentioned

Cheers everyone...

I've done an RAC check on it and I've got the engine number, so I'll check it against it when I go this weekend.

Everything seems to tie up, but it's an ex cop car, with suspected head gasket failure (header tank looks clean, so I don't think it'll turn out to be the oil cooler), has steel wheels and trims on at the minute, no badges on it for clues, and the interior looks a pretty low key affair.

It is a manual though  :)

From what's been said already though, the plenum looks to be that of a 3.0l... here's a picture of it;

Yeah mate thats the extended plenum only found on later model 3.0's...seems a fair bet...the low key interior will be because its ex cop...and as said all MV6's are 3.0 by default unless the engine has been swapped since...

Marvelous!

I thought most of it would be down to the 'ex cop' thing, but you never know if somebody's badged it up as an MV6 or what...

...Either that, or I'm just too cynical!  ;D
