Tech2 Gearbox update...
« on: 23 May 2008, 21:47:11 »

Dear all,

I am thinking of doing the Tech2 Gearbox update for the Mini facelift Omega.

Has any member who owns a 1998 Omega 2.5 v6 CDX Auto saloon with Climate have done this update? If so, can you share your experience please?
(i.e. the smoothness of the gear change / ride quality / or in particular any other observation that you have noticed before and after the update )

With kind regards,

I had both done last night by The Boy.

It's really like driving a different car, and one that doesn't blow a tornado in the car as well

This is the second Miggy i have had it done the S/W updates for, the gearbox changes are a lot smoother

I also had the engine software updated, it seems to have lost all its flat spots, the pedal isn't quite so trigger happy (DBW remember)

I was planning to join our fellow OOF memebers at the WIM Open day, unfortunately I am working this weekend.

Awaiting your feedback on the gearbox s/w update.

Hope everything goes well and enjoy the WIM Open day.

With kind regards

is gearbox software update worth doing if everything seems to be running without fault, by that i mean is it like an upgrade rather than a repair? interested to know what difference it will make

Must  admit my climate does blow like mad and the gearbox can be very abrupt on the up change. Didn't know you could do a flash on the software

Purchased something similar but it dosen't do 2.5 or 3.0lt. I think theres some differences even thou the plug still has 16 pins. Think it's called gm 10 wire,gm 12 wire or true OBD 2.

That will read and reset codes.

Real tech2 costs several thousand pounds.

Yes it's worth having it done. Changes are far smoother.  :y

Gearbox update done today (Thanks TB) then an 86 mile drive home.

Definitely a major improvement .. (went from v3 to V9 if memory serves me correctly) ... changes are smoother - mostly you only notice by tone change /rpm change, "kick-down" seems to be a shade faster - might be my imagination, but MPG has definately improved by about 2 mpg overall on the average which is on 390 miles right now. I'm not certain but it feels like the "lock-up" is occuring about 10 mph earlier.  Well pleased

Climate upgrade ... I wasn't very happy initially. For the first 25 miles it did nothing but blow cold air - not conditioned cold ... just cold.. even on max heat. I turned it off for 30 minutes (I was bloody frozen) then retried it, on max heat I got very luke warm air in. Turned off for 10 minutes, retried, now a decent bit warmer .. not hot but useable... used that to get home.

Went out tonight, car had been unused for 4 hours, and it is almost back to normal .. on max it's pretty hot, and it's controlling at 21C reasonably well..... hopefully it will continue to sort itself out and return to normal.

One other oddity ... it no longer does a "reset" (that I can hear anyway) on pressing auto+off like it used to... :(

On the plus side .. TB not only did the gearbox/climate . but  AFAIK on al the cars he plugged into he did a full diagnostic check as well, very gratefull for that... thanks   :y :y :y
