Fitting a new door actuator
« on: 25 May 2008, 15:34:38 »

OK, my bodge with the WD40 worked for a while, but the passenger door lock has now reverted to type and only works occasionally on central locking.  :(

Looks like I'll need to get a new actuator. When I had the card off before, it looked like the actuator was a real pig to fit. Is the mechanism held on by the two bolts on the rear of the door?

If anyone has done this job, I would be pleased to receive any advice.

Cheers

The motor/actuator is fastened to the lock mechanism & comes out of the door as a unit. You remove the 3 Torx drive counter sunk screws around the actual door lock, the bit that holds onto the staple like reciever on the B post. It's a pig to get it all out though cos you can't get your hands in. I removed the airbag system's pressure switch from the door to give me another point of access. Where the various rods from the interior door pull & lock fit onto the whole mechanism, there's a plastic clip that needs to be turned through about 90 degrees to allow removal - you see when you get there.

I removed my door lock recently cos it was getting harder & harder to open the door. A liberal coating of grease & chain lub has sorted mine out.

Remove strip from the back of the plasters & apply as neccessary!  ;D

Once you have the lock motor out, dismantle it. Inside you should find two microswitches, check the normally closed contact resistance of both. One will probably be a bit high, change one, or both, switches and refit.

Maplin or similar should have suitable switches.

Not sure I know enough about microswitches to satrt dismatling stuff like that. Vx want £64.63 fro a new central locking motor, so I may just have to bite bullet on this one.

From reading this, aren't we talking about a central locking solenoid? I replaced my drivers-side front solenoid - was pretty easy if you follow the guides. The most difficult thing really is getting the door card off without breaking any clips!

There's a pretty detailed step by step guide in the Maintenance section - http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1175610013. I bought a second-hand solenoid from a dismantler for £28 (I think), which came with 6 months warranty - beats the Vx price and has so far lasted about 14 months. Will dig out the receipt for the name when I get home...

Passenger side isn't too bad, I did it in about an hour. Once you have removed the door handle and took the three torq screws off you can manouvre the whole unit to the opening in the door and just unscrew the two screws without removing and unclipping everything.

Worth reading this before attempting to remove the door card:-

This what I did..also the solenoid's are universal. I took mine from a O/S scrap door and put it in the N/S door on my car, just needs turning around

Just one caution from my experience.  Dont leave the key in the car while working on the door.  Managed to lock my one and only key in the car becuase the door components were loose and the door closed and trigered the central locking - had to pay for codes and wait for a key to get back in.  :'( Ah well these things happen :-[

Thanks guys!

It's embarrassing to note that I have been a member on here almost since the forum was set up and yet it took a newbie to point out Tunnie's excellent maintenance guide.  :-[ :-[

In my defence, there's just so much on here that I can't keep up with everything (I know, a poor excuse!  ;)).

I'll check out the scrappies' prices before I take the plunge.

Nick

you and me both then!!!

I sat for an hour on the weekend and figured out how to change the motor over, once i have established where the rods went and how to undo them it was easy.....

My advice is take your time, allow for far more time than you need and then you wont feel the need to rush it

Got a quote this morning from breakeryard.com:

Solenoid: £30
Delivery: £9.00
VAT: £6.83
Total price: £45.83 (inc VAT and Delivery)

Yes. it is £20 cheaper than Vx, but it is used and only has a 90-day warranty.  :-/

I need to have a think about this....(it's not urgent and it's constantly raining anyway!)

I have to do this job on mine soon. Driver's side motor fubar.

I have bought a new motor. Don't think it was as much as 60 quid though. Around 40 quid on TC IIRC. :-/ I might be wrong.

Given that mine (and yours) have failed on 5 year old cars I'd say it's a false economy to get a 2nd hand one. Might have a look at replacing the microswitch on my old motor but if I'm going to the hassle of removing door cards I want to know I've fixed it.

.. and if yours is the passenger side don't deadlock it while it has an iffy motor. :o

Kevin,

Hi Nick,

Maybe they gave me a trade price. Not 100% sure but I think I would have baulked at 60 odd quid. I'll see if I've got the receipt at home.

Hi Kevin,

Went to Vx and discovered that it's not a TC item. They had one in stock at £58. On the basis that my time is money, and I would feel happier with a brand new one anyway, I paid up... ::)

Next job is to fit it

Cheers
