Re: Omegas and Camber:- Explanation
« on: 06 January 2008, 11:18:04 »

This post comes at a good time.  I've just replaced front tyres after 10k motorway miles as the inside edge (unknown to me) had scrubbed through to canvas.

I thought the problem would be tracking related but it appears maybe not.

My question is, should I be looking to adjust the camber to compensate for tired springs or replace the springs?

I would guess that the answer to that question is "Either, but not both".

Cheers Tony, for attempting to explain what's going on here (it was me who visited you yesterday morning  :y),  I think I needed new wishbones anyway, as a lot of the clunks and bangs from the front of the car have gone following VauxhallOmega1's kind help with these.

Interesting to learn that the real problem is related to other things though, I think if I read what you've written about 8 times I may even understand.

If someone could sketch a diagram, that would be even better  :).

This is were i feel really sorry for Omega owners.

The reason for the problem is incredibly hard to explain but the solution is simple.

Owners who experience this historic type of tyre wear do not need to replace the coils..... Ok in an ideal world i would say you do, but in the real world it's the position of the cars weight at the tyres contact patch that needs to change.

Luckily this is possible since the camber is naturally adjustable on the Omega. The million dollar question is to where?

wim has written a progressive table for the Omega, researched over many years.... I will not display this table but i will help any members out of sight (email-pm) with the positions.

In time this will become public knowledge anyway via members exposing the calibration positions but for now i hope this insight and offer to help personally will help those who feel distressed in this arena.

Could we not arrange a day out 'cambering' and visit as a group.

Have you space to do an Omega Camber Alteration Workshop?  ;D

It would also be interesteing to know if these types of adjustments can be done accurately without any specialist equipment?  (Forgive me if this information is available through the link you provided, I haven't had time to look in any detail yet.)

Good idea. :y Lots of us are prepared to make a fair trek to see Tony so combining it with a gathering to put some names to faces would be great.

I'd be interested in this as I am still not happy after having my car set up twice by a local firm, with assistance over the phone from Tony.

I think my only option is to go to the man himself. It's only fair I put some money his way after his very kind help.

How would a club day work though - there are only a certain number of hours in the day, and some cars may take some time. And the poor bloke(s) need a lunch and tea breaks!

When l purchased car recently went to have balance and tracking done.

National would do balance but told no point in doing tracking as camber all out. Recommended Supertracker in Southampton. Have latest wireless type equipment and are also manufacturers of equipment. Car now drives completely different. Get a computer printout showing before and after settings.
