Front Pad Rattle ?
« on: 12 June 2008, 19:26:35 »

Gettimg a rattle noise from around drivers side front wheel.  The only thing I can find loose at all is the front disc pad. There was nothing to stop it moving around and the noise did seem appropriate, however
I have v6 2.5 and am told there is no "antirattle spring" .

Has anyone had any similar experience and could suggest ideas to cure it.

Really noticable when travelling over rough roads.

Can be the disc metal back plate, if it gets bent it can make contact with the rotating disc, makes a lot noise over broken surfaces, bend it out of the way, also check drop links.

Thanks for the photo.

I now its hard to describe noises, but I would have thought if the drop link was worn then it would have made a knoking noise, not the rattle type of noise I am getting.

I am almost sure it is the front pad loose,  As I said I was expecting a spring clip type of thing, I think they are called antirattle spring, but am told on this model they are not, so what is there to stop them from rattling?

Your welcome for the picture :y
If the droplink is knackered it does make a clonking noise when you go over bumps mate :y

As for your rattling you think its your pad you say? when you fitted them did you put copper grease on the rear of it? i think this is supposed to stop rattling.
If I remember rightly there are two dowels that go through the holes on the pads and there is a spring that holds the pad in place... it is a while since doing mne so i could be wrong!!

Are they worn then and perhaps moving more than usual?

I had the same thing on my old Toyota, which a garage claimed was a wheel bearing going!  Flaming muppets! >:(  It took me 3 minutes to find this out and two minutes to adjust this plate to stop it rubbing on the back of the disc. :y

No I dont think they are worn too much.

Will have a good look over the weekend (again)
I did find one of the caliper guides seized but managed to free that OK, which at the time I thought I had found the fault, but still the rattle!!

How much play is there?  Is the piston hard against the brake pad back plate?

Are any warning brake lights showing on the dash?

Hi Lizzie ,

The pad I think that is causing the rattle is the one on its own nearer the wheel, not the one in contact with the piston.

How much play is there?  Are the holding pins worn / loose?
