Morning everyone, I hope that someone may be able to help, I apologise if this has been posed or similar.
My Vauxhall Omega 2.5 V6 was working perfectly fine, until about 3 weeks ago. On the way back from Lunch it "cut out" I lost power and steering was a problem. I had to pull over and the lights that was on, were the engine management light, and Oil. I know Oil is fine. Anyhow I had to get towed to a local garage. They took it in and i made alternate arrangements to get to work, knowing I was also going on holiday 4 days later, i gave them my mobile number etc. I didn’t hear from them, so i dropped in and they said they were going to change the "temperature sensor" first, ok about £35. |Nothing from them.
 I had to go on holiday, and when I came back. Still no voicemails. I checked back in to them and they said we are waiting on another part, what I believe to be a "Crank shaft sensor" this was supposedly coming in a couple of days. I waited, nothing. then i dropped in yesterday and tried to find out what was going on, wand they said they were waiting for me!!! They didnt have my contact details. The crank shaft sensor replacement (£75) did not fix it and before spending any more money on it they would call me . They said that its definitely he "Airflow meter", these are £260. I was annoyed that they had seemingly lost my telephone number!!(How convenient), but I just wanted to know if this sounds like the correct troubleshooting they performed, are they fobbing me off etc. I am happy to provide any more details if I can. They said that they took the airflow meter of another Omega and it cleared the error codes down, and it all started working!!

They are clearly incompitent...........willy nilly part changing is both expensive and muddys the fault (coz you can never be totally sure that a new part works!)

So, first up, no way would it be the temperature sensor causing stalling. If the values from this sensor fell outside the tolerable limits then a default value would be used by the ECU and the engine light would be lit. The result would be higher fuel consumption but not stalling etc

Secondly, the crank sensor is a likely cause but, they should have examined the fault codes first and checked the live data (this would also have provided info on the coolant temp sensor)

As for the MAF, VERY unlikely and easily proved by simply unplugging it (where agin the ECU will default to preset values and throw a code).

So, ideally we need to knwo the fault codes.

I assume its had a cambelt change at the correct intervals?

If only you had found this site sooner you could have probably saved a bit of money, time and hassle.  You can read engine codes on your model with a paperclip.  You would probably find that a 19 was stored in there and the original fault would have been cleared with a genuine vauxhall crank sensor.  

When the crank sensor goes haywire it can bring allsorts of unusual codes up.  I doubt a new MAF sensor/temp sensor was/is needed.  If they've used a generic crank sensor it could be that it never fixed the original crank sensor problem which is why genuine vaux sensors are always advised.  

Don't really know where you stand now but I'd advise against getting a new MAF sensor and take the car home.  The car should still start and run with it unplugged so if it does turn out to be the MAF sensor (which I doubt) you could get one out the scrappys for less than £30.

The car does not even start, so i cant get it home. I could potentially get it towed, perhaps. Unortuanely i had no choice in the garage it went to, as it happend so close to this one!!

Good point about the error codes, but wouldnt they just "tell me what i wanted to hear" ie they will give me the error codes for the things they say are affected?

Personaly I wouldent pay for what they have done as they havent been doing their job, just replacing parts at random which is I think criminal.

If the car no longer starts I fear you may have a more serious problem as alluded to earlier.  Ask them to check the cam belt and if it has gone tell them they are complete incompetant fool-robbin gits and get the car taken elsewhere.

crankensor sounds likely, and when they fail, frequently report maf fault.

Presumably if the maf doesnt fix it, they wont charge you?

31 is expected because the engine is not running. 74 is MAF. But I would not be convinced unless you saw those codes come up. If not you could  check codes yourself by the paperclip test (see how to section).

But they are not expecting you to pay for the parts they changed that were not faulty, are they?   How can they justify that?

I would cancel the MAF job if I were you.

Last week I see a faulty omega cutting out with a MAF problem in an opel service..

And they also find the problem with trial and error after 3 days


scrappy will be a cheaper solution I think..

I still don't believe the MAF and crank sensor both failed at the same time.  I wouldn't be surprised if they destroyed the MAF sensor by taking the back off it and having a peek when fault finding.  They are very delicate and can't be fiddled with.  I say you tell the garage you don't want the new MAF sensor and just say thanks but no thanks I can't afford that kind of money.  

Get it towed home and buy a new MAF from the srappys - that bill you've been quoted is obscene.  I don't even think they could justify a labour charge - you literally seperate it from the air pipe put new one in. Job Done. That would take less than a minute to do, no exaggeration.

Whereabouts are you - someone on the forum might be able to help.

E.g. temporaily swap the MAF - takes about 5 mins.

I'd suspect crank sensor myself. Bet they've messed up the replacement.

If the parts they've fitted haven't fixed the problem then it's their mistake not yours. Have you got legal insurance with your home contents insurance? Give them a ring and see if they can help.

Cancel all jobs with this garage in writing and get the car away from them - do it quickly!
Depending on where you are someone should be able to recommend you a decent garage to take it to.

id also ask to see the old crankshaft sensor, or ask to see the old wire that they may have cuts the ends off of, as mark dtm stated in his guide that to get the old wire out is virtually impossible ,
basically what i am saying is have they any proof they changed the crankshaft sensor
