Flickering EML but car runs fine
« on: 18 June 2008, 09:11:28 »

Not having much luck recently, now I've got a flickering EML. Should it come on and stay on or is this flickering normal ? It mostly on, maybe once a second it flicks off then immediately back on again.

When theboy had his tech2 attached on monday he did say he was seeing a crank sensor fault - the EML light wasnt on at that point it just came on this morning. Could the crank sensor cause this flickering ?

I'll paperclip it later on when I get home.

Car still seems to run fine even though the EML is on.

Cheers

hi mate, i had the same issue with the EML flickering, 2weks after this started the crank shaft sensor failed. so best bet as the boy said, change crankshaft sensor- very very easy, readthe how-to guide.

What engine is it - check the wiring to the EGR.

Mines doing this, and the car seems fine.

How long its been doing it though I will never know, as the EML bulb was wired to the battery light to make it look like it was working  :-[

LMF are utter rubbish - dont buy steering idlers from them! You've been warned![/size]

okey dokey  :y Going to change the crank sensor anyway as it showed up as a fault when theboy tech2'd it (before the light came on though). If that doesnt fix it then I'll have a proper poke around.

If EML flickers when ignition is on, shouldn´t it mean that immobilizer is active?

And imo it should give that crank sensor fault when codes are checked without engine running.

EML will flash on/off with ignition on, engine not running if there is an immobilizer fault, but if it flickers during an engine run, it can mean that a sensor is intermitintly giving a faulse reading (the ECU is recieving some ohm values that are above/below the sensors set range)

hard to tell what sensor it is - but if you already know of a fault with the crank shaft sensor from a tech2 machine its a good place to start.

Crank sensors, (as far as i know-correct me someone!), are a very common sensor to fail, they usually fail after about 60,000miles / or if you sit in a lot of traffic letting the engine run hot a lot, as in 70% of cases it is the cable that runs next to the engine that gets very hot and breaks down-not the sensor, but just fit a new sensor anyways.

good luck

Just to clarify - it flickers with the engine running, theboy found a code19 when he tech2'd it earlier in the week. Sensor on the way....

I think now I also have a cam cover leak, found a smidge of oil in one of the plug wells this morning when poking around. Going to clean the breathers at the weekend, then think about the cam covers a bit more...

I cant think of anything in the 'normal' faults list thats left to go wrong !

last 7 months have seen Crank Sensor, Oil cooler, dis pack and leads, wishbones, HBV and Cam covers (as well as a new exhaust) ! I guess I should expect the steering idler to pack up next....

Pop it back up, we'll see if anything has come back in the engine ECU.
