Can of petrol and a box of Swan Vestas anyone?
« on: 19 June 2008, 21:38:16 »

Hi all

Goodness gracious this automobile is starting to irritate me a little >:(
Had a post a while ago as the car had developed a vibration. Had lots of useful pointers but none of them appeared to be causing the problem. Fault all but disappeared until yesterday. Started the car as normal outside work letting it tick over whilst fastening my seat belt. Suddenly the car was rocking from side to side as if something was out of balance or all the components of the engine had gone oval. This was an exact slow motion version of the vibration I had experienced whilst driving. The odd thing is the vehicle was in park(auto) so prop was not rotating, wheels not turning and presumeably gearbox not rotating as well. Put car on ramp at work and checked for excessive prop shaft play found nothing but a tiny bit of lift around centre rubber mounting. Checked security of gearbox and engine mounts all o.k.
As soon as you put the lightest of pressure on the throttle it stops and runs smoothly. Wondered if it might be a fuel problem but it is not a missfire and the engine pulls faultlessley like a train weather cold or hot. Gearbox changing as it should. When it happens driving it feels like wheel wobble without the steering wheel shaking. The whole car seems to shake but you can accelerate out of it. When stationary in park best way to describe it is if someone was at the side of the car rocking it to and fro. Please help as I am getting to the end of my tether with this thing and I am going to barbecue it!

Given that its a TD (martin ::)) I would be looking at the fueling system, it might be an iffy injector which shows its self more when only flowing small fuel quantities.

Apparantly a trick well worth trying is to chuck some diesel magic in the fuel filter in the engine bay and crank it over to give the fuel system a good fast flush through.

Might also be worth checking out the diesel lift pump guide in the maintenance guide area....

Injectors easy to replace (not cheap though), but one of them needs a special tool.

Also, just check the engine mounts, particularly the drivers side one (the turbo tends to cook it).

Start at the tank ........
Remove ALL the fuel, then the pump/swirl-pot assembly, Platty has posted an excellent missive in 'Maintenance Guides'.
Clean everything, including the tank spotlessly.
Then remove complete fuel filter assembly. Remove filter from it's housing, and check the heater portion is tight to the filter-case. Fill a new filter with Diesel Magic or Forte and reassemble.
Refill tank and try it out - see where you go from there, and keep us posted ..... !

Thanks everyone.

Will check the engine mount again as suggested by The Boy and then I was thinking along the same lines as Sethsmate. One thing I am not sure of is if the clip is broken on the ribbed pipe that Platty talks about can you buy these or do you have to make something to fit? If you secured with a cable tie or similar would the diesel affect it? or melt it? or could you use a standard metal fuel pipe clip?
Obviously I only want to be doing this once so a permanent repair is preferable.
Thanks for liking my picture chrisgixer but why do you think I look like an ostrich? :-?

Of course that is my portrait ::)

Regarding the ribbed pipe in the fuel tank:
Vx parts diagram shows (correctly) three pipes, (and part nos.), within the tank, though it's difficult to ascertain which is which.
However, I can confirm that the supply hose has part no. 90 530 391, and the return hose has part no. 90 530 392. The ribbed pipe, (that connects the T-piece at the top of the pump to the base of the swirl-pot), is obviously the third part no. on Vx's diagram.
Platty changed this ribbed pipe, and may well know this part no. Try a 'PM' to him.
Incidentally, press the retaining clip forwards, (in the direction of it's forked end), and the ribbed pipe should release from the T-piece.
Alternatively, it is possible to remove the whole swirl pot/pump unit as a complete assembly once you've got the tank bone-dry. You can then dismantle on the workbench - much easier .... !
