Welcome to the forum Barrie,

If you are getting codes and warning lights, the first thing to do is get all of the ECU codes read.

TheBoy, or Mark's DTM calib have real "tech2's" that can read the codes - you can also but a cut-down version with a lead and connect the car to your laptop and read them yourself (about £30?)

Where are you located?

There is no dipstick for oil checking. You must have the car running on a level surface, and slowly fill the filler hole with oil until it starts to run out - level is then correct.

Be sure to only use Dex3 ATF.

You could also do a complete box oil change, this can cure many evils.

hi and welcome,

I would start with checking the gearbox oil level, this is not an easy task as there is no dipstick, with the engine running you have to remove the oil filer plug in the gearbox and fill the gearbox until the fluid starts to come out of the hole.

if the problem still persisits then i would say the issue may be more serious

this is not an easy task

I don't like to disagree mate but that sounds quite offputting. It's actually not a difficult job and there is an excellent detailed guide in the maintenance section.

Just be prepared to get a load of nasty ATF up your sleeve  ;D

If you do go for the oil change, look for the remains of a thrust washer in the sump.

don't forget these problems aren't always clear cut. The engine ECU can ask the gearbox ECU to limp, and the gearbox ECU can ask the engine ECU to limp! (limp - go into "get home safely" mode.

Gearbox limp mode is when it pulls away in 3rd gear and it feels like it's in neutral - sounds like what you describe Barrie!
